Default Help me date my .38

I just acquired a 38 S&W Special CTG. The SN is C 407xxx It has a 5" barrel, hand ejctor fixed and fixed sight. It has a strain screw and I could find 4 other screws. It is in excellent condition. I just have no idea of the mfg. year or value. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I was given this from a friend whose husband passed away. Thanks

Mid 1950s. Somebody can get more precise. C1 started in 1948 and C999999 was reached in 1967.

It is a .38 Military & Police from about mid-year, 1958. So, it is slightly below the threshold of when the model-marked guns (Model 10, in this case) start showing up.

Interestingly, this is the serial range in which the .22 M&Ps appear. My data show two of those (C407xxx) that shipped in July, 1958.

Added: It should be noted that .38 M&Ps with higher serial numbers can be found that shipped in the spring of 1958. So, ship date guesses can be way off the mark, especially in this period. They can, of course, always be off, but in some periods the likelihood is even greater. If you really must know, the only recourse is to get a letter that will tell you the exact day a gun left Springfield.

A little additional information. It is in the 1958 manufacture SN range. C405,019 – C429,740….....1958 – 59, so a likely early 1958 manufacture with shipment a little later. Regarding value, that would depend greatly on its condition and originality. In average condition, in the neighborhood of $400, maybe more today due to the recent rush to buy guns. M&P model number stamping (Model 10) began at around SN C438xxx.

Default Thanks

I appreciate the quick response. It's a nice looking revolver but I really don't know much about them. I'm still learning. I have a S&W M&P 22lr for the range and a 38 special for carrying but I wanted to know a little more about this one. Any idea of the value?

Pics would certainly be helpful, but absent that and using your previous description, $400 to 600, depending on where you live. Also depends on if stocks are original to the gun, and if you have original box and docs.

It's still a GREAT defensive handgun imo, but S&W produced a lot of them, for a long period of time.

Everything on the gun is original. It is in excellent condition. Doesn't have the original case. Wish I could insert a picture but honestly haven't figured out how yet. When I try it wants me to insert a URL instead of just insert from my files.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass. In the lower right bottom of the text window, click on go advanced. Then click on the paperclip icon and attach your pictures, up to five , to the post. They need to be sized no larger than 1920x 1080 pixels. You can do that with the paint program or any picture editing program.
