Default 44 Hand Ejector 4th Model Target, 4" barrel engraved

Serial number S1179xx, blue, 4" barrel, fully engraved. I was asked to estimate the value with only the Std Cat of S&W, 4th edition as a guide, pages 188 & 189. Where do I find the form to submit for the 'Historical Letter' ?

I'm certainly no expert on engraved S&W's, but I don't see a trademark stamp. Factory engraved guns that I've seen typically have the small TM on the left side of the frame, about where the gold dog head is.

I'll bet you 5 cents it's not factory work!

Other experts will be along to confirm, but I do not believe that is factory engraving. Very nice gun and has appeal to my taste in engraving. Being a 4" 1950 target makes it interesting with the engraving added, estimation of value will be in the eyes of the beholder on this one.

It looks like a very fun gun!!! But it's probably not factory engraving. It is hard to tell from the photos - is the engraving filled with white? The factory did not do that and as was noted above, factory engraved guns almost always have the small S&W roll mark on the left side of the frame above the grip, like this factory engraved .357 (SN S114979 - pretty close to yours) that shipped in 1954:

I agree the engraving was not done by S&W. It is hard to say for certain, but is appears as though the engraving was done through the blue finish and left in the white. I have seen a few other S&Ws engraved like that.
