17-1
6" barrel, was reblued and tuned up by S&W about 10 years ago, original target grips. Not used since rework and appears 100%, serial #K427***. Standard Catalog of S&W shows mfg date of 1960 or 1961. Wonder if anyone would have an idea of current value? Thanks.

17-1's were not made very long, 9 months maybe a year. Most shipped in 1962. A nice example with original finish would be around 900 - $1000. Refinished it is a $500 gun.

I would probably go to $700 on it because it would be a birth year gun for me and because S&W did the refinish.

If the value is reduced by 30% because of a refinish, my inclination would be you have a very nice looking gun that should be shot frequently and enjoyed for it’s original purpose. I don’t believe it would be discounted further by a turn line.

At $700 I would buy it in a heartbeat and would probably pay more. If it looks like most factory refinished S&Ws it likely looks almost new. When was the last time you had a chance to buy any 17-1? I have K22 Outdoorsmans, pre-17s, a 17, -2, -3, -4 but no -1 and have been looking for one for a long time.
I've overpaid for a couple S&W refinished guns (considerably more than the $700 being mentioned here as top dollar) and am not the least disappointed with the results. Here are a couple; a pre-27 shipped to Kansas City police department in 1950 (refinished in 1982) and a 48 no dash (1960) refinished in 1969. As a long time member here has noted before, factory refinished by the same people, using the same equipment and processes, who did the original finish. What is not to like? Buy it and enjoy it.

I agree, I'm not purposely saving it, just don't shoot much and when I do it's with larger calibers. When I got it there was a lot of blue wear and some mechanical issues so I sent it back to S&W for refurbishing. It wouldn't have had a lot of collector's value in the condition it was in. I appreciate the comments.
