Not nearly as nice, but I don't have to baby mine when shooting it. One of my daughter's favorites, though she doesn't really understand how old it is. Shipped September 1931 to Los Angeles.

I have a couple but they're not in the collectors quality yours is, that is one nice K22.
I forgot to add that the first one with the green background in number 103 of the ser# list shipped January 30, 1931.

I'm also a Yooper with a K-22 First Model. This revolver was shipped on June 8, 1939 and delivered to Motor Police, Reading, PA.
I believe the grips are from a Regulation Police model because they are missing the silver medallions and are not numbered to the gun. I also added the Pachmayr Gun Wks grip adapter.
This revolver has one of the smoothest actions in my collection.

Yours is very nice and those boxes are getting to be worth thier weight in gold, not to mention yours is original to the gun....priceless. I found a fairly nice one last year and a very nice forum member sold me a nicei set of grips correct and with wear equal to that of my gun. They are beautiful revolvers!

I'd be willing to bet the SAT and cleaning tools were missing? I too have a real nice one like yours with the box, but the tools are missing in mine as well. The SAT's alone are going for $1,000. I paid 3/4 of that for my gun and box. Thanks for sharing. Big Larry

IMO, S&W has never produced a gun to match the beauty of a K-22 Outdoorsman. The one you obtained is pretty much as good as it gets. Congratulations!
My .22 Outdoorsman left the factory in May of 1939.

Your killing me Richard.. 
Richard on the pinto was the hammer and trigger re-case hardened when it was engraved I haven't seen many that darkly colored.

Yes it was re-color cased by Turnbull, and as color case is a bit unpredictable, it turned out a bit darker this time...

The grip maker for both the top standard grips and the bottom oak leaf Kearsarge Style target grips is Keith Brown. The floral grips for the middle one were most likely carved by the engraver - Orvile Kuhl.
I also love the well-used ones and this one, equipped with the period grip adapter and photographed with the holster it spent most of its life in, is one of my favorites:

Speaking of boxes, I saw one in so so condition go for $800 on Ebay. When I bought my 22 Outdoorsman, the seller held back the original box and I had to pay $400 for it. Well worth the $$ as I only paid $425 for the gun, and it is a real nice one. Shipped to a Hobart Morton in 1938. Big Larry

Looks a lot like mine. Did you find it locally? I found mine at a pawn shop in Renton (Pinto's).
I miss popping around stores in the Seattle area. No one takes inherited old guns to a shop for quick cash in this area like they do in Lib-Land.

I bought one of these yesterday. The seller shipped it UPS Next Day Air. UPS sent me a notice yesterday saying the package will be delivered today. Today they sent me a notice saying "label created." Needless to say, I'm on pins and needles today.
Would someone explain how the rear sight adjusts. I'm guessing one screw attaches the sight, and the other adjusts for elevation. Must one loosen the attachment screw before making an adjustment?
It looks like the usual S&W windage adjustment.

Unless you purchased a 2nd Model made in 1940 or a post-WWII gun, it is not the "click" adjustment with a screwdriver. It's more as you describe in your second paragraph --- loosen, adjust by hand, tighten.

The windage adjustment is tricky as the screws are tiny. To avoid buggering the slot, you might want to put some penetrating oil on them for a while before attempting to move the sight blade. You loosen the screw on the side you want the blade to go, then tighten the opposite screw. If you've got an extra $1K or so, you might find someone who will sell you an original SAT.

Here is my one and only K22 Outdoorsman.
My factory letter says “We have researched your Smith & Wesson K-22 Outdoorsman or K-22 First Model, First Production Group, caliber .22 Long Rifle, in company records which indicate that your handgun, with serial number 632157, was shipped from our factory on January 17, 1931, and delivered to Folsom Arms Co., New York City. NY. The records indicate that this firearm was shipped with a 6 inch barrel, blue finish, and checkered walnut grips. This shipment was for five units of this model and they were billed at $22.13 each. This revolver has been modified by the addition of a King super ramp and sight."
I don't think I have seen one that shipped earlier. Some did, I just don't know if they are still with us. Because of that, it is the gem of my collection.

On December 22, 1930 this K22 was ordered built for presentation to Officer Joseph Gaudreau of the Springfield Mass Police Department On January 24, 1931 Victor Wesson made the presentation, along with a shot speech at the Smith & Wesson factory. It was given to the officer for his apprehension of 2 armed thugs. A traffic stop of an alleged stolen car resulted in struggle with the driver. After a foot chase, Gaudreau caught him and handcuffed him to a tree. The suspect then urged his accomplice to shot Gaudreau. He did shot at him four times, but missed. Gaudreau later caught him again after a foot chase. They were later convicted of armed robbery and attempted murder of a police officer.

Great gun and story. Does it letter as shipping with the 4" barrel? Or was that changed out when the star was stamped on the butt?

I searched the files. It has a date stamp of 5.47, but I can't find anything. It's definitely a pre war barrel. There is no star on the barrel. It has the early gold bead front sight as well. It certainly looks correct, but the invoice says it shipped with a 6" barrel.

Don't you hate when the invoice gets in the way of the current configuration... Regardless of how it shipped, whether the records are correct or not, that is now one of my favorite K-22 Outdoorsmans of all time.

I displayed it at a recent Annual. I have several pictures of Gaudreau. I have one of him along his partner with a member of the mob. He had shot and killed a man then dumped his body down a hole for a telephone pole. The man was later executed at Sing Sing for a number of murders in New York State. In his career he received a number of citations and commendations.
It was only the second time in the history of Smith & Wesson that they awarded a gun to an active Springfield Police Officer.

It’s possible that the S&W Historical Foundation has the shipping invoice which may list all of the serial numbers in the shipment.

I understand the windage adjustment; I have other guns that operate that way.
I'm still not sure about the elevation adjustment though. The sight is the type in post #1, photo 7, and post #13, photo 2. I imagine two ways it could work. If both screws are threaded into the frame: 1) There is a spring under the sight and the rear screw compresses the spring. 2) The bottom of the sight is curved and the two screws oppose each other in pivoting the sight on the fulcrum.
My gun arrives tomorrow. Maybe I'm worrying about nothing, and it will be obvious when I examine it.
