Model of 1955
I just brought home my new precious. A model of 1955, pre 25. It came with these un marked target grips which are fairly comfortable but I would like some original style grips because I like the look better. Which grips would have originally been on this one? Also, the serial number is S 1307xx. What would the year of manufacture be? I am looking forward to shooting it with a variety of cast boolits, just need to find my moon clips or buy some auto rim brass.

I think the original grips would be cokes with the diamond around the screw. Even current production Goncalo Alves would look better than those thumb rest after market grips that are on it. Congratulations on a fine S&W 1955. The pre-25s are rarer than the model 25-2. They started using model numbers right after the 1955 came out.

The stocks you are looking for are Diamond Target stocks which are different than Cokes and cost less. They could have shipped with relieved or non relieved stocks depending on ship date.

You have a very early 1955 Target. I have several of these and the early ones often came with non relieved, diamond walnut targets. Either relieved or non relieved would be correct.

I too have a model of 1955. The full moon clips i've used for several years without any problems are Wilson Combat #6985 Full Moon Clip S&W Revolver Blue Finish. Package of 5. Bought some from Midway and Amazon. Not terribly expensive.

My pre 25 came to me wearing non relieved targets The non relieved targets were issued between 1952 and 58 IIRC.

These, like all S&W ACP revolvers, were rifled for hardball. Fortunately, target shooters figured out how to make them shoot with lead. I started out with harder cast lead, ala Elmer Keith, but found that a properly fitting bullet worked well even when softer. A long bearing surface for the weight helps also. My current favorite mold casts a 240 grain full wadcutter bullet, SAECO 453. Other companies make similar. I have not had the accuracy from heavier bullets that others report. I also have not tried target loads with 200 grain bullets or less but hear those work.
Attached is a story about the Model 1955.
The original manufacturer of the modern moon clip is Ranch Products in Malinta Ohio. Great prices and great folks. Phone orders are easy.
The best 45 AR brass is from Star Line. The price from them includes shipping.

Below is a photo of the correct stocks for your 1955 45 Target revolver. This model was cataloged with target stocks made of American walnut. The left stock panel would not have the relieved area.

Your pre-25 most likely is a 1955/early 1956 shipped example. S130xxx serial numbered N frames were the earliest Pre-29 guns produced in late 1955/56. Those guns were produced from S130XXX frames pulled from production intended for other N frames models, the Model of 1955 in particular. Request a factory letter and get all the details. Nice find!

According to my data base there were probably more pre 29s built on the S130xxx frames than the pre 25s!
Here is my birthday gun(I'm a few years older) #S143225 shipped 16 Sept 1955. I put the cokes on the gun as it came to me without grips!

The S130xxx serial number series is quite interesting. As already mentioned, the N frames with this series was originally made for the Model of 1955, and they were pulled for production of the .44 Magnum. Over time, some of them made their way back to production of the 1955. It took until 1959 to assemble and ship mine.
Congratulations on your Model of 1955. They are a joy to shoot.

The grips are Herrett, probably. They are very nice and I think they actually might still be in business, haven't bought anything from them in years.
