Default Yet another serial # request

I was trying to find some info on a S&W that I've had for years and stumbled upon this incredible site. I think it's pre-war, but what do I know? 6", target sights 1539xx on crane & butt. Any info would be very much appreciated. It's only in fair condition, but a great shooter.

OK, I read the instructions oops!
Barrel marking "22 long rifle ctg."
Yoke = blank
No letter in Serial number
No model number

4 screw sideplate
Strain screw at bottom of front strap
Serial # on crane & butt

Thanks for the guidance. Should I move this to the correct forum?

Yes it's a big block.

What is the caliber? They did not put serial numbers in the on frame behind crane pre war only small meaningless assembly numbers were there. Is there a letter on the butt with the number? Sometimes there is a fair gap between letter and number but it is part of the serial.

Maybe incorrectly I'm referring to the part of the frame behind the yoke as the crane.

Mo letter behind the yoke or on the butt, just 1539XX

There are some tiny/unreadable numbers on the yoke and behind the yoke on the frame. I assumed these were for assembly tracking at the factory to keep fitted parts together.

In addition to the 4 screws in the side plate, there is a screw in the front of the trigger guard.

The ".22 Long Rifle CTG" part was the key.

It is a .22/32 Heavy Frame Target, first made in 1911. The serial number on these is on the front grip strap, and as noted above should not have been stamped on the frame near the yoke. You should see the same front strap number on the rear cylinder face and the barrel flat (near the extractor rod) if it has all-original parts.

Likely an early HFT, probably 1912. That early, it might be worth the $100 cost of getting a historical letter just to see where it was shipped.
