Show Us Your "One Digit Wonder"
This thread could probably go into any of the categories, but I will start here.
It is not a perfect world out there, and people do make mistakes and oversights. Even though I am almost absolutely positive that these are correct, it still is annoying the way they came out. If you have any 'matching' numbers that are one digit off, let's see 'um. I'll start out with a Pre-27, and then a model 34-1. Please don't tell me that I am the only one that has something like this.

Well, it took me awhile; but I finally figured out I don't have any. I sort of had one with the serial number 11112.

I thought it was going to be single digit serial numbers. I held Winchester model 70 serial #6 years ago.
I saw a Winchester model 1886 in 45-70 that wore serial #1 but was remanufactured by someone and it was a new number. It was offered to me for $2,750.00 thirty years ago before it's history was known. The Cody museum told me that they have serial #1 in their possession, but knew of the very gun I had seen. It was again offered to me for $1,500.00 last year. Unfortunately my friend who knows the owner has recently passed so I can't help anyone who should want it.

From this thread:

Well it looks like S&W only made this error on three guns, and I was unlucky enough to have two of them.

I didn't post earlier because I don't have one, but I've seen a fair few on the auctions with the s/n one digit off -- it's always been the last digit.

I currently have one pre war gun with stocks that fit perfectly but are 12 #s off. I've seen or read about at least a couple of dozen instances.
WHY?
Stock serial # only a digit or two, up to a dozen off from matching the gun ON THE RIGHT END OF THE # are not common, but not uncommon either. The likelihood that they were mismatched by a factory employee is the most plausible reason. This type of mismatched #, for all intents and purposes, are considered by most collectors to be factory original stocks.
Recognize that every gun and pair of stocks that are mismatched creates at least a second mismatched gun and stocks, but possibly more.
THE PROCESS
Stock numbering and matching to gun during the soft fitting process before eliminated in 1957:
“The stocks were fit to unfinished frames in the stocking department and the last step in fitting was to serial number the frame and the inside of the right stock at the same time. Then the frames would be separated and sent to fitting and the stocks would be sent through finishing and then forwarded to the stock holding area just outside the final inspection area. Here they would be sorted by frame size and put in numerical order by serial number. Once the hand gun had gone through the firing range they were delivered to the stock holding area and the correct numbered stocks would be matched to the frame and installed on the gun. Then to final inspection and packing department. Hope that this helps.” Roy
When were stocks installed on new revolvers?
EXCEPTION
The only exception and other possible cause is law enforcement that make a large purchase, and only applies to models used by law enforcement such as Model 10s, etc. In this case, stock #s from one to a hundred or more digits off are most likely from the agency armorers working on and/or cleaning, etc., the guns in batches and replacing stocks w/o paying attention to matching the stocks to the guns when re-assembling them. This type of mismatch gets no grace from collectors, however.
BOX #
Mismatched box #s on relatively new or one owner guns is a different issue and can usually be laid at the feet of the local dealers.

Doesn't fit at all here. But not to miss 'war story' opportunity.
Two pre WWI Oberndorf Stutzen Model M sporting rifles. Purchased almost two decades apart, some thousand miles distance between. With... Consecutive serial numbers. Each original & matching pieces; about twins! Almost half century & 124,000 production Oberndorf sporting rifle total numbers. Wonder what were those odds?
Thanks for 'tolerating'.
Best & Stay Safe!

My March 21, 1947 L.E.R.K. K22.
You'd think with only three digits, they'd have been able to get it right!
