Ebay and prayer.

You could do worse than putting a WTB here in the Classifieds. I've been very successful in what I've sought from the members here. If we can help, we usually will.

Post a WTB in the Classifieds section... that would be a great start.

You might also check on eBay periodically.

I have been looking for a nice set for some time now on ebay with no luck. As a temporary fix, I did find a set of imitation ivory stocks and drilled them for recessed gold medallions from a set of broken round butt K frame walnuts. Not sure if someone still sells them or not??

Even though they were used from 1910 to 1920, the N frame walnut stocks are a tough set to find.

A nice set of Ropers, although not period correct, could work. I did that with a Triple Lock I own and was happy with the results. However, original Ropers might be even more difficult to find than a set of pre war N frame stocks.

Note that pre-war N-frame grips are not the same as post-war grips, there is a difference in length.

Will M-1917 grips fit?

And are those longer after 1920? I thought S&W used existing frames for various N-frame guns long after WW I?

Yes, 1917 grips will fit. So will any pre-war (up through the very early post war long action). There were a total of 5 different styles of pre-war grips used at various time periods.

I have a VERY rough set of the correct grips you're looking for but I haven't had time to restore them. I do most of my restoration and checkering in the winter.

I'll try to take pics and send you a message this weekend.

1. No DWalt meant post WWII grips/grip frames are different: they are about 1/16" longer.

2. You are correct.

The correct grips you need are not that hard to find, especially relative to other styles.

There were close to 76,000 pairs produced just for the .455 BSR 1st and 2nd models, plus close to another 10,000 for the 44 Spl 1st Model TLs (not double counting the ~1300 .455 TLs numbered in the 44 TL serial # range.) And not counting the approximate 1st two years of production which did not have grips with medallions.

Beside the WTB adv., watch ebay and gunbroker. Don't buy the 1st pair you find, look for a pair that matches the wear on your gun. I found a pair for my .455 in a couple of days.

This is often a confusing descriptor when talking about WWI guns, we should state which pre-war we are referring to? I try to remember to add the roman numerals.

Carefully look through this link: Accessories/Misc - For Sale or Trade

Agree, of the pre-WW I era stocks the 1910 decade N frame stocks are not hard to find, but not quite as common as 1917 Army stocks.

The stocks unicorn of this era are 1900 decade N frame, checkered with flat tops - only made for the Triple Lock and not in large numbers.

A nice set of pre war N frame stocks go for around $200 these days. If not in tip top shape, the worse the condition, the less you should pay for them. I would purchase a pair that reflect the condition of your revolver.

These are not rare, except when you want a set, they are then rather pesky to find.

As stated, the non medallion stocks are difficult to find. I saw a nice set offered for sale recently for $950. Not sure what they actually sold for.

In the "Accessories/Misc--For Sale or Trade", a seller has two pairs of these for sale currently. Worth looking at, but keep in mind my valuation parameters. Good Luck!

Are you restoring grips just for yourself or are you willing to become a replacement for DWFAN??

DW and I spoke before he had to give it up. I just work too much.
Mostly for my own guns or to resell. I don't have much free time to take on orders. I do take some on, but only one set at a time.
