1946 m&p
I just got this a bit ago, thanks to a forum member. I was searching for a 686-2 or 4, when I saw this on armslist. Something just spoke to me; I know most love 4" barrels, but something about this one with a 6" barrel just said Oh Yeah. . 20200906_090437.jpg

S&W did not start selling M&Ps after the war until early 1946. Some early ones were made up from wartime frames in inventory at war's end, but I doubt yours was one of those. Provide a SN and you can get a little better dating. Is the SN written on the bottom of the box, usually in crayon?

6" is a great length- wait til you shoot it. My transitional is a tack driver.
Congratulations!

Just a guess on the date, since the catalog states the s prefix starts in 1945, and the revolver serial number starts with 85xxxx. Thanks for all the wisdom. 20200906_101418.jpg. Post pictures of m&ps. Thanks again

S853799 would date its probable shipment to late 1946. Closest M&P on my list to it is S8503xx which shipped on 11/20/46. It's fortunate you have what appears to be the original box as it enhances its value substantially.

I have S8559xx which shipped on 03/11/47, so I bet your 1946 guess is close. That's a nice find!

S853799 very likely shipped in November, 1946. My database contains about 5,000 examples of the postwar .38 M&Ps and those with numbers close to yours shipped that month. I own a 6" example only 600 numbers away from yours and it shipped in November.
This one is pretty nice and the 6" barrel can make them great shooters. The box is also a plus.
The six inch is the least common barrel length in the 1946-48 period. Then comes the 2", then 5". The most common is the 4" barrel. BUT, if you break down the 2" guns between round butt and square butt, the picture changes slightly. 2" round butt M&Ps in that period are the least common by far.
