new to me mod 14 no dash, 4 screw, 6" target hammer & trigger

I got my gun two days ago and spent the last two days getting lead and carbon fouling out of the cylinder and forcing cone.
The inside works were remarkably nice - it's the first Smith revolver I've owned with no hammer rub arcs on the side plate, and just one trigger arc on the frame. I gave that a good rinsing, lubing and put a shim in the hammer and trigger pins to center them in the frame opening. It passed all function tests, has a nice crisp, consistent single and double action pulls on all cylinders, averaging 3lb 10 oz single, and a heavy, but very smooth 11 lb double. I'll work on that.
I also notice the hammer thumb spur seems a little thick, as it has left a little cocking mark on the frame, like a hammer bite under the spur.
The magnas number to the frame, and oddly, the crane and grip frame serial numbers match.
The day was overcast, so no matter how I tried, there was always too much reflection in the finish, but FWIW, here are some pictures.
I'd like to find some diamond targets for it - would they be football cutouts, or no cutout?

Judging from the large amount of carbon crud I found in the front of the cylinder bores, and the lead in the forcing cone, the previous owner(s) did a lot of wadcutter shooting, which is just what I want to do with it.
Can't wait to shoot this, but with 5 days of rain in the forecast, I guess that will be a while.

Probably football cutouts. Gun is too late for no cutouts. Be ready to spend another $200 for a nice set of diamond center target stocks. Big Larry

If you reload, I think that using coated or plated wadcutter bullets would avoid the leading issue.

Thanks, I've yet to try either of them. Are they available in hollow base, and respond to the ~same loadings as lead hollow base??

I'm not aware of coated or plated hollow base bullets. Maybe someone else can inform. The Speer and Hornady lead HB have proven to be the absolute best performers in my .38 Specials. Any leading might be attributed to too much horsepower or perhaps poor bullet diameter to bore ratio. That said, and not being a competitive shooter, I've settled on mostly 158 g. coated lead. There might be a tiny drop off in accuracy, but not much, given old eyes and hands. I like the cleaning characteristics of coated as well as the easier chambering.

Larry is right about the football cutout grips.
And judging by the lack of wear on the recoil shield, I suspect the former owner only did a little shooting and even less cleaning, so I bet your HB wadcutter loads will be fine.
