Default Hoping 1956

My brother is hoping that this was made in 1956 ( birth year) and if so that he can have it. Hopefully I can find out here. I appreciate any help.

Welcome to the Forum.

Looks like 1958-1959. Is it model marked on the frame, behind the yoke?

Hi Greg and welcome to the S&W Forum.

Unfortunately for your brother, it is highly unlikely your .38 M&P is from as early as 1956. According to both the Standard Catalog of S&W and my personal data list, that revolver is most likely from 1958. The number is slightly below the earliest model-marked Model 10 revolvers. Those started shipping sometime in 1958, at around the C43xxxx range.

Thanks for that. I had read that they started marking Model numbers on the guns in 1957. Since this is not marked I was hoping.

My 2" M&P is C4261xx. It is also unmarked as a Model 10, and when I bought it I was hoping that it was a 1956 (birth year) gun as well. However, I have resigned myself that it is a wife's birth year (1958) gun instead.

Sistema1927— At least it matches someone in your family. I’ll hang on to it and attempt to clean some of the surface rust off of it. It has a lot of holster wear but doesn’t appear to have been shot very often.

C405,019 – C429,740….....1958–59 (manufacture)
Those on my list which have reasonably close SNs to yours shipped in 1958 or later. The first Model 10-stamped gun is in the C438xxx SN range.

Model numbers were assigned by a directive from management in July, 1957. Changes like that cannot be implemented immediately due to several factors involving the production line.

So far, we have never identified a model marked gun that shipped from the Springfield factory prior to January, 1958. On most models it was later in that year. So, it is best to think of 1958 as the first year of model numbered guns.
