Finally, A Post War Pre Model 10 Snub Comes My Way
Just picked it up today from a good friend who graciously decided to sell it to me. I have wanted a post war snub nose for a while. Came in the original box, matching stocks, looks brand new really (minus some slight bluing loss near right side trigger guard). Serial number is C 101xxx, which I think puts it somewhere between 1948 and 1952, maybe?
I paid $600.....which might seem like too much to some. But gun prices are regional, and here in Georgia 10- fill in the blank snubs go for $500-$600ish for the gun alone. All in all I feel really good about the buy.
It also came with a sealed cleaning kit. Don't know a whole lot about these, but I'm pretty sure it's a much later kit with a aluminum SAT, aluminum cleaning rod and threaded aluminum bases on the mop and barrel brush. A nice touch, even though it's not original equipment.
I'm going to shoot it Monday. I'm thinking of qualifying with it and carrying it on duty. I'm a training division sergeant and us staff weenies are allowed to carry sub compacts and snubs when we are doing office duty. I might find a nice vintage holster and dump pouch and do it right! I think it would be nice to carry this old gentleman my last 5 or 6 years until he and I can fade away into retirement. Anyway, a good day for me today.

With the box and in that condition, you won't get hurt at $600. It's actually too late to be calling it a Post-war Pre Model 10 as it has the short action with the fish hook hammer. More like just a plain pre-Model 10. C101xxx dates its shipment at around early 1950. Grips are correct.

Very nice. Congrats.
I call 'em what the box says: ".38 Military & Police Revolver."
At the time S&W had no clue it would become the Model 10.

Nice.
You're right- the tools are later, and a fixed sight gun did not come with a screwdriver.

Congratulations. I think you did very well. Those model 10 snubs are so popular around my area, that gun would sell for $650-$700 maybe more in that condition without the box. You have a solid collectable gun in the box for the price of a plastic gun.

I'd have paid that for it. I have a couple 2" M&Ps a 1948 and 1949 model. The '48 has long throw and the '49 has short throw. Also the '49 is a round butt which seems to be the predominant variation in the early short throw period...at least, I haven't seen many square butt versions in that time period. Congratulations!

Nice snubby CQB27. That gold box is probably worth $100 on its own. Mine is in the low C91,000 serial number range and shipped in December 1949. I paid around $600 for it about 5 years ago, no box, but that was from a retail gun shop and I'm in California where everything is higher.

Very nice snubby. They are good shooters. I have an August 1950 one, C124xxx. My "grail" gun. Shipped one month to the day before I was.

Hmmmmm......
Ask JP@AK if he has any with original rod. It was most likely the rod like you have and only a bronze brush with brass threads.

Congrats for finding what you wanted. I wouldn't have thought twice about paying that for the gun and box. The gun and box both look to be in very good shape. Like was said above, the box is probably worth $100 by itself. I have seen SAT's like that one go for $20-25. I think you did well.

Now you need to find a Gaylord holster. Unfortunately most of those expose the trigger, back in the 50's it was a safety feature, my how Glock changes things. Geoff Who refers you to:

Congrats one of my favorites. My pre 10 and Highway Patrolman feel the most solid and have the best actions of the revolvers I have.
