Trying to get a current market value price for 6.5 Registered Magnum for an older friend who is not too computer friendly. Nice blueing and grips...sadly no box docs tools etc. The front sight is a Kings gold bead was that common?

I think they could be ordered with any available front blade. A factory letter (and SWHF records search) would be a good idea whether or not he is considering selling it, and I am not sure how common the 6.5" length was, but I would guess a minimum of $4-5000 for a value. RKMesa and the other serious collectors may think that is ridiculously low (or high) .

Thanks Murphy. He thinks 5.5-6 grand but I think thats pretty optomistic. Recently dealers have offered him $500 to $1,700 thankfully he knows better!

seeing the exact condition from these photos is difficult. Also, a lettter would well be worth the $75 before selling it. Assuming all is matching, not refinished, etc. the $5,000 to 6000 range seems about right. However if it shipped so an interesting person... the price could easily go up. JMHO

First of all, he needs to get an historian's letter from the Foundation. Then, have the Foundation do a search for other information. Letters cost $75 and I don't know what the foundation charges for other information it finds. However, he needs these documents to get top dollar. I believe your friend is right on what his gun is worth. With box, tools, papers it would likely approach or top $10K. Shooter grade RM's are selling for over $4K in upper conditions.

Good looking RM. If that humpback hammer letters as original , that could add another $500 to $1000 to the price depending on the true condition of the gun. Get it lettered! Bill

Suggest you check the right grip serial number to verify that it matches the gun and of course verify the serial number on the butt, barrel, cylinder, and under the ejector star all match. Finish looks to approach 97% in your pictures. Assuming all numbers match and a factory letter confirms the barrel length, sight, hammer, and grip configuration that is a $6K gun all day in Virginia.

I wholeheartedly agree with all of you recommending the letter. I don't letter all of my guns, but I have lettered all of my pre-war 357's and in my opinion, all pre-war 357's "need" a letter. The factory kept additional information on these semi-custom revolvers and letters can bring to light some cool stuff.

My guess is that REG 3021 probably shipped in the 4th Q of 1937 based on shipping dates of mine with close REG numbers. I would think that the RM would have been an early one to ship with the HBH, if the HBH is original to the gun.

6.5" Barrels were the most common length, but if that front sight configuration is original (and perhaps the rear sight is a white outline "U-notch" King blade), it is not common. Usually if a RM has a gold "McGivern" bead, it came on a standard base, not the King ramped reflector base. Based on what I can see from the photos, I think the $4K-$6K price range that folks have thrown out sounds reasonable to me...

Good Luck!

jframejoey, You should have immediately advised your friend to get a factory historical letter & the SWHF research documents for this RM. That's a basic step for ANY Reg. Mag ! It's like a birth certificate for an Orphan. Pls. post what you find out after getting the needed info. Value could go out of sight ( Unless your friend was the original purchaser ) Ed.

Maybe should clarify one thing - assuming the gun is 97%, all correct, no box, and shipped to a hardware store (i.e. no special historical association) I don’t see a dealer stepping up to $6K, but I could see a knowledgeable dealer with S&W collector customers going $4K. To reach the $6K figure I think you will need to find a RM or S&W collector.

Buddy got a letter from Mr Jinks and gun letters as being shipped on June 17 1938. It was delivered to a Mr. Erich Schreiber of Fitchburg MA. Best part is hump back hammer letters to the gun.

My friend went back and forth about selling and now he wants to sell. He asked me to put it in classifieds. I asked him how much.... $9,995!!! I told him hold onto it for awhile its not a sellers market right now. Nice older rarer gun but it wasn't Pattons!

Is the registration number 3021 or 3921? Also, the sale may be helped by obtaining a letter of authenticity from Dr. Jinks at the Smith & Wesson Historical Foundation.

Also, the asking price is much too high (but, you know that already).

Bill

Looks like a very nice original condition RM with some nice features (HBH and Gold Bead FS). Magnas look near perfect. The price is high by around 25% or so unless it has a super cool letter like Bill stated - then it could be worth more

He can ask whatever he wants for it. Let him use that price, it will quickly weed out all but the most serious shoppers, and who knows, he might get it from somebody who wants it badly enough. That kind of asking price isn't unreasonable for a gun like that, it will give him a lot of bargaining room.

1. A dealer offering $500 to $1700 for this gun is a criminal. A dealer has to pay wholesale to make a profit but not rip off price. My favorite shop used to offer 75% of what they thought they could get for it and that sounded reasonable to me.

2. Get the damn letter before doing anything. Could greatly increase the value.

3. Your friend can ask whatever he wants. Can always come down if no movement. I would start a rattle trap RM at 9 grand and wait. Anyone says "Too much" I just tell him to go buy a new one.

I know a lot of people don't like auction houses but they do tend to get the best price for this type of firearm. I am often surprised at what stuff sells for at Rock island auctions. Nice revolver and good luck to your friend.

Nearly two years to get the letter and nine months to decide to put it on the market? That demonstrates to me he is not in a hurry to sell, along with the $10K asking price.

Yes, but the owner of the gun may lose money somewhat by using places like Rock Island. Say that a buyer is truly willing to pay $9995 to own that gun. Rock Island charges a 15% buyer's commission, 18.5% if you pay by credit card. If you pay by check that works out to a hammer price of $8691. But Rock Island has bid increments so an odd number like that isn't possible. The highest if could be and stay under $9995 total price (including 15% buyer's premium) is $8500.

But Rock Island also charges a seller's premium. Apparently this is negotiable and can be as low as zero for truly spectacular items that may bring huge bids. But this is a run of the mill RM so let's say it's 15%, same as the buyer's premium. 15% of $8500 is $1275.

So the seller receives $7225 total from selling his gun through Rock Island instead of the $9995 that a theoretical buyer may have paid. Or he could list it in the classifieds on this site which costs nothing.

The buyer on RIA will also pay tax so a bid will also be influenced by that.

How about just listing it in the Classified Ads section of this forum at a reasonable asking price?

Yeah I keep getting bugged by him to sell it but he is got his Rose Colored Glasses on and thinks its Pattons RM. Im not about to run people around in circles and post it at his almost 10 grand price.....that's basicly like running it like an auction which is against forum rules.

I'd be interested in that $500 to $1,700 price range.

Depending on your relationship with the owner, you can simply place a sales ad here with the qualifier “selling for a friend” (and “I did not set the price so no snarky comments please”) at whatever asking price he wants.

The importance of your relationship with the owner is that you would need to tell him about any counteroffers, and it sounds as though he is not in the mood for that. Personally I wouldn’t do it without this and the understanding that you are just the messenger for offers (and doing him a huge favor in the first place). Good luck in your decision.

Eric Schreiber was a police officer in the Fitchburg Police Department. The registration number is 3921 and was shipped (originally) with a red post ramp reflector font sight and a King #112 white outline rear sight.
