Before and After
I always wanted to do this, post before and after pics of a Smith when I got it. I saw this gun on GB and thought it just needed a little attention. It looked dirty and well, dry. I got it for an ok price, $399. It’s a transitional 38 M&P, sn S 83333, circa 1947. After applying liquids ( Flitz polish, G96, Rem oil, elbow grease, and Flitz wax) I’m very happy with how it turned out. No real turn line, just a bit of silver at the muzzle and the bore is like new. A few blemishes here and there. Grips match and they cleaned up nicely, too.
Hopefully the bad pics show the difference. The first two are before and the last three are after.
This is my favorite part of collecting: spending time with a “new” gun, reading up on it and shining her up.

Does it have a plugged butt where the swivel would have been mounted, indicative of using a left over WW2 Victory model frame? Ed

No Ed, it does not. I’m guessing ship date of 1946. Long action, one line address 5 inch barrel, no hole in butt frame, and with the S sn I’m assuming new hammer block. Dave

That's a handsome M&P.
Your sn seems to be short a digit.
I have a 5" that shipped in December '46. My favorite of the postwar M&P's.

I have an S 844- that shipped in October 1946, so yours likely is a month or two earlier, assuming it starts as an S 833- and the missing digit comes after. The entire S-prefix series evolved from the military, then commercial SV-prefix guns and did indeed get its prefix thanks to the new hammer block.
