Default a revolver worthy of bird's eye maple stocks

Yup, I finally purchased a revolver worthy of my B. E. maple stocks. It is a pre-model 18, born somewhere around 1950. When I got it home it went for a good cleaning. As far as I could tell, it had never been serviced...still had "mud"-old lube in the usual spots. What a wonderful find for me during these troubled times.
As you can see from my messy desk area, the original stocks (numbered to the frame) and the smooth presentation stocks from the same era...black discs on both sets.
I'm off to the range today to enjoy my find, no safe queen here. If you got em, shoot em! that's what they are for.

best to all, c.w.

sorry...they came out upside down...can't fix from this end...

range time was good...cold wind shortened time there, but functioned perfectly...

Maybe we just need another cup o coffee. Not fancy, but I have one set of maple grips, which currently live on a 2.5” 19-4.

When I went looking for some target grips for my Highway Patrolman the Culinas had these available. I snagged them quick.

C.W. I'm on pins and needles looking for your photo. For whatever reason, it is not showing for me either. But, I'm expecting something pretty spectacular.

Excellent gun and great stocks. I bought one at a gun show a couple of weeks ago, mine dates from June 1954 and it shoots great. S&W made great guns in the early 50s.

I like your Birds Eye...
While not Bird's Eye, these are Tiger Striped Maple. Mr. Culina made these up for me on request, he has done some experimentation on oven roasted Maple to bring out the variation in the grain. Never been disappointed in the work from the Culinas.

C.w.- Who is the maker of your stocks. I’m not familiar with B E? They are very nicely done.

BE = Birdseye

They are factory stocks that started out as non-relieved and have been modified.

Yes they are S&W made stocks, and they do seem to be modified. Who ever re-shaped the right side did a masterful job imho...if anything matters, a full view of the S&W stamping is worth the price of admission alone. I would date the stocks in the same era (1950's)... so does the mod. really detract? I don't purchase guns to make a profit. I see revolvers of the time as industrial art, and the stocks also.

best, c.w.

Duh, BE is Birdseye. Thanks. I was curious as I do like the fact the logo shows on the right side but wondering about non-relieved on the left side. I just didn’t figure them for factory. Nicely done. I don’t think they detract from the gun in any way. If you don’t have the actual factory numbered grips, any stocks on the gun are not original. Shoot it and enjoy it. Just save the numbered ones for a later sale. Thanks

I love Birdseye maple ! My favorite wood after nice walnut. It looks like that set was nicely modified to fully display the S&W logo. The eyes have that chatoyance that always amazes me.

Thanks for showing.

Never heard the word before. Had to look it up. Did you have to rent that, or do they let you use it for free?

I forgot- gorgeous grips. Not usually a big fan of maple as a wood. LOVE it as a syrup.

I learnt that while whittlin on a set of your grips way back when. Artfully inlaid a new piece of wood, cut and sanded till I was pleased with my handiwork and took a break all puffed up at how well that went ! Came back later and added finish and watched as the repaired area lit up bright as I shifted the panel in my hand 🥴. I learnt chatoyance right after that !

Keith, a set of your very own Birds Eye Maple adorning my 27-1. I've heard of something you can treat them with to accentuate the "eyes" but can't remember what that was ??

Default just to keep the thread a little longer...

To avoid confusion, I shoot the k-22 with these stocks on it to save the originals and the dress-ups. I'm honored that Mr. Brown chimed in, and not "dis him" in any way, but I like shooting stars (Herritt's) because they were a treasure hunt, that is another story one day.

Thank you to everyone who joined me in my time of pure joy.

sorry: I am still up side down...but you get the idea!

best, c.w.

I love these Culina combats on my 327 NG - both for the contrasting look and the feel when shooting.

The wood can have heat applied, think oven, I believe it causes the resin in the eye to darken, making them pop a bit more.
I have not done it but may try sometime. There is a company that roasts it, turning the wood darker, and the color is consistent clear through. That process is closely controlled and I think also done in vacuum. It is also supposed to make the wood more stable.

Just noticed the Culina striped set above, it is probably roasted as I have some of that and it looks identical.

I assumed that it meant someone on one of these forums that talks and talks without saying anything or people that can only be nay sayers to everyones posts. Sort of like troll talk.

In the muzzle loading tradition many maple wood stocks had a solution applied to it that contained nitric acid and iron, it was allowed to try, then heat was judiciously applied, it darkened the contrasting fibers or grain and later when a stain was applied it made the grain pop. I asked John if he reproduce that look, he said the chemicals required made it very difficult but he mentioned his attempts at roasting to bring out the grain. I think it did very well, along the lines of Iron Nitrate.
It was interesting using the Iron Nitrate, you soaked it into the wood on its next to final scraping just before your ready for stain. After it dried you got a feathering of the wood where fibers were raised, you then do your final scraping and apply one more coat. Now with just burlap you give all the wood a good rub down, it should shine. Now comes the heat, the unheated stock will have an almost greenish cast to it before you apply the heat. I used a heat gun, as the heat is applied you need to be extra careful of leading edges as it will burn but soon enough you get the hang of it and it darkens the alternating grain beautifully. When you finished its up to you how you want to apply a finish or stain to even further make the grain pop. On my last rifle I used a mix of red/orange aniline dye and applied it evenly, it really popped the grain, in sunlight it looks like its going to jump out at you. Then you can apply your final finish which traditionally is an equal mix of gum turpentine, beeswax and linseed oil. Lots of hand rubbing with hours setting next to the wood stove.

A pair of Mr. Browns maple stocks on my 27 no dash. And another maple pair by an unknown maker on my 38/44 Outdoorsman. The unknown pair came from a SW Bunch auction a few years ago.

OK. I’ll play too. Maple on a nickel 19-3 I sold back to the original owner and then moved to another 19-3 that I still own. I think they work on all finishes. Enjoy!

It's interesting how high the S&W stamp is on the last one. Seems to me target grips usually cover some of the stamp.
