Most likely shipped in July, 1947. I show quite a few in that general serial range. The closest three are in the S90958x range. All of those had 6" barrels. Is that the length of the barrel on yours?
Your M&P is also right near the point when the barrel shaped extractor rod knob disappeared forever. The highest number I've located with the old knob is S907854, but that one has had a barrel change. I suspect it originally shipped with the knurled end, and not the knob. Would you let us know which extractor rod yours has? Thanks.

Jack, Mine is a 6" barrel and has the small extractor knob. Thank you for the assistance.

I am happy for you that you acquired a Military & Police 38 special.
The M&P is the most successful revolver in history.
What is this "pre 10" of which you speak?

It is a birth year pre Mod 10, shipped most likely July 1947. My birth date is Sept 1947.

What Waveski is getting at is that your revolver still has the long action. In "collector-speak" it therefore would not be a "pre-model 10," since those would have the high speed hammer, which was not introduced until March, 1948. In addition, some of us dislike the "pre-model" language altogether, since it reflects anachronistic thinking. But that isn't really the point here.
In any case, congrats on finding a birth year gun. For many guys that is a big deal. I've never really cared one way or the other, but lots of people like that idea. I bought one for my wife one time that was shipped not only in her birth year, but also the correct month. She thought that was pretty cool. Guess I got some "points" out of it.
