Default S&W pre model 10 2"

Hi,
I have a S&W hand ejector revolver, I think it is a pre model 10. It is a 38 S&W SPL CTG 2" with serial # C 165371. It is blue with original grips, half moon front sight, frame groove rear sight.
Please let me know if I am correct, I am looking for year of manufacture and approximate value and any other information.

In my area, one very similar to this (1952 vintage 2 in similar condition with original grips) sold 2 years go for $425. Hope this helps.

.38 M&P Pre-Model 10 serial C151961 was shipped in February 1952. But, .38 M&P Pre-Model 10 serial C156210 was shipped in March 1951. Which just illustrates that S&W did NOT ship in SN order. When JP@AK wakes up and votes, maybe his database is more precise.


I think the previous poster is pretty close on value.

Very nice pistol. I'd take the stocks off and see if the serial number is memorialized on the back. They'd have $499 on it at the LGS's around here . . .

I have C165078 which I think is 1951 but don't have a letter. Paid $432 for it but that was six years ago. Wouldn't expect to find it where I shop now for less than $500; likely would be $599 and negotiated from there. Enjoy.

I have C168xxx, 2" which shipped Apr 1952, so I would also guess mid 1951.

The closest one on my list shipped in March, 1951. But, as Guy noted, they did not ship in serial order, so you can easily have a few months leeway in either direction.

Yea, this really illustrates S&W's habit of not shipping in SN sequence. Not even close. My 2" SB, C188067 shipped July 6, 1951 to Sharp Horsey Hardware, right here in hot lanta.

I have 2" Pre-10 C124xxx shipped 8/14/50 - a month before I was born. Lettered. The serial numbers are all over the map. Letters are the only way to make sure.

That is a fine revolver , very classy.
Please consider calling your revolver a Military and Police , or M&P , because that's what it is.

I lucked out on this S prefix , 1947 , last year. Set me back about $470.

The closest 2" M&P I have listed to your C165371 is C16888x which shipped in 4/52. While any M&P snubby in higher condition is desirable and will command a premium price vs. a contemporary M&P having a longer barrel, those few snubbies which were made prior to WWII can be very valuable, while postwar (long action) examples in the S series are generally more desirable than C series snubbies.

Way back when, Sam Colt advertised his handguns as "pistols." And of course there are also single shot pistols of many designs, they don't have to be semiauto.

I have that habit too........even though my grandfather loved to call them both "pistolas".

I think I do it simply to keep folks from correcting me as they see fit, but to be honest I tend to call most anything that goes bang a gun, and all ships are boats to me. At a young age various soda pops were simply "Cokes". (I might have done the ship/boat thing just to annoy the Navy folk while on "boat" deployment. )

I know, there's simply no hope for me now.

Interestingly, Sturm, Ruger always listed their semi-autos as "pistols" and their wheel guns as "revolvers." They still do.

If you contemplate the history a bit, you realize that handguns of the muzzle-loading, black powder variety were mostly single shots (with some obvious exceptions) and were routinely called "pistols." So, the early revolvers tended to get that moniker as well. When auto-loaders came along in the late 1800s, they were called "pistols" also. The revolvers gradually earned the right to be called by their description (they had revolving cylinders) and the auto-loaders retained the "pistol" name. almost exclusively. It seems this was particularly true in the military.

None of this really "proves" anything. I just find it interesting, from an historical perspective.

We actually had a decent sized boat setting on the flight deck of the USS Wasp (LHD-1) on one of our deployments that could be set over the side and used for going ashore, or for other various purposes. It weren't no teeny-tiny boat mind you, but a boat none-the-less.................or so the Navy fellas would point out when I called the Wasp a boat instead of a ship! (Purely accidental of course.)

How right you are.

While were on deployment, underway to some undisclosed location, the decision was made to take an aerial photo of all the vessels that were part of our group.

For the briefest of moments the submarines attached to our group surfaced just long enough for the pics to be taken and then slipped silently away.

It was rather eerie to watch happen, but fortunately enough we were given a quick heads-up by the Navy as to what to look for.

It was rather comforting to know they were out there watching our 12 and our 6.........as well as our 3 and 9.

Never make the mistake of calling it a boat in the presence of the Skipper, heard more than one CO say, loud and sarcastic,

”Let’s call it a ship, shall we”!

Go to sea, drink coffee, deploy Marines...Repeat. 😎

With all due respect, that place in Groton CT isn't called Electric Ship. Every sailor I've ever spoken with all refer to all the subs as "boats". I'm a Plank Owner on USS Springfield. At the commissioning, in New London, CT, the Admiral referred to it as a boat.

Don, the surface sailors are sensitive about terminology. Vessels on the surface are ships and under water they're boats.

Absolutely, no argument there, Submarines are Boats.

Maybe because there is something inherently wrong with a Ship that’s designed to sink? 😁

Sheesh. Talk about thread drift. I had to to read the whole old thread to discover where it stopped being about a 2“ M&P.

Would the 2" barrel of the topic of this thread be ideal in the confined passageways of a submersible boat? Now that were back on topic, shouldn't its stocks be flat bottom high horn Magnas?

Oh, I paid a little over $300 for my excellent condition 1950 2" M&P. So what? We don't have a time machine. The further back in time you go the smaller the percentage of production got 2" barrels. Consequently, the price difference between an early 1950s snub and the same year 4" should be greater than the difference between 1960s or 1970s PISTOLS.

If you are referring to Mike's Model 10 snubby, no. High horn magnas were never put on M&P's. If you mean "sharp shouldered magnas," again, no. The sharp shouldered magnas were phased out around 1953 or so for the more rounded horn. PC magnas were also introduced around that time that also had rounded bottoms for less interference with clothing.

I was referring to the snub owned by the original poster, John. High horn v. sharp shoulder? I do not know the difference. I'd have sworn my roughly 1950 2" M&P has one or the other and its stocks are numbered to the gun. The stocks on mine look like the stocks on 22hipower's 2" 1951 pistol pictured in reply #8. The stocks on John's pistol have rounded bottom edges and the tops of their horns are too rounded. I doubt they number to the gun.

High horn magnas were stocks used on the Model 40 and 42. Sharp shouldered magnas are like those stocks in post #8 by 22hipower. The OP says the stocks are original and was asked if they numbered to the gun but never replied. They are PC magnas which might have been available on his gun depending on when it shipped. I think it is likely they are replacements.

I think we have just a bit of a terminology misplacement.

The term “high horn” is a dedicated term for the style of upward-extended stocks used on the J-frame Centennial series.

It is not applicable to any K-frame style at any time. As Guy says, the only difference that matters in this gun’s timeframe is the distinction between the sharp-shoulder magnas and the later more rounded shoulder.
