Sterling Hayden’s Registered Magnum
I keep going back to my quest of trying to find Sterling Hayden’s Registered Magnum, which he carried in WW 2. I know he sold it it an Army Lt., who brought it back home, and had it restored in 1954 at the S&W factory. Aside from knowing it had a 6.5” barrel, and gold bead sight, I do not know who owns it now. I would like to see a photo of it as it is today, and maybe a little more of it’s story after it was sold by it’s original owner.
Can anyone here enlighten me? Thanks.

No idea where it might be but I read an account of his service with the OSS where he operated a sailboat. I hope it wasn't aboard. Maybe that was the reason for the restoration. Saltwater damage? Good luck. Interesting thread.

Thanks to the OP for bringing this subject to mind. I've been interested in Sterling Hayden for a long time ; after reading the linked article I just ordered Hayden's autobiography "Wanderer".
Can't wait.

I was glad to see this thread pop up. Hayden was an interesting fellow. I can remember seeing his movies when I was a kid and a teenager (Dr. Strangelove).
Funny thing, the first thought that came into my head when I saw the title of your thread was, "I'll bet there are guys on here who don't know who he was. Some were born after he died." A thread for us old people?
Anyway, good luck in your quest. Let us know if you find anything.

From the article:
Hayden’s personal sidearm of choice was the relatively new Smith & Wesson .357 Registered Magnum, a gift from his uncle before his deployment. According to Hayden, that uncle was also a part-time firearms instructor for the New York State Police.
A little research (maybe it's in the pages of The Wanderer) should reveal the name of the uncle and at least the year, if not the month/day, that the RM was purchased. Given that information, perhaps Roy Jinks or one of his crew could ferret out the RM's number / serial number.

“Wanderer” doesn’t address the RM, or his Uncle. Sadly, only the info in the article is out there.

I searched Sterling Hayden's name in S&W's records, but nothing came up. I assume the RM was ordered by a regular distributor and then sold to the uncle or to Mr. Hayden. Without the serial number or registration number the RM is very difficult if not impossible to research. Even with those numbers, it may just show as being shipped to a distributor without reference to whom it was ordered for.

Thanks, Bill. I thought my only hope would be if there was someone on here who knew the person who owned it.

Here's a quote from the article:
"S&W parachutes behind the lines: Sterling Hayden’s .357 registered Magnum
sported a 6.5" barrel as well as a Call gold bead front sight, squared notch rear
sight and checkered “Magna” grips. According to S&W records, it was ordered
factory sighted at 25 yards with a six o’clock hold. Photo: David Elliott"
Perhaps someone should contact David Elliott through the American Handgunner magazine, as it appears a letter was obtained on this RM.

I use the light blue background, so the red shows up nicely. Someone had a post about a week or so with yellow print. Now THAT was hard to read, at least on my screen.

Pictures attached. The action is tight, timing perfect, along with bore. Trigger is light and crisp. There is some wear on the muzzle. Also has the gold bead on the front sight.

Welcome to the forum. That's a nice looking revolver. I'm wondering how it is relevant to this thread.

It's not. He has another thread on that .22. Must've posted in this one inadvertently.
