Default Pre Model 25 - 1955

Due to age and health reasons, I've decided to sell my 5-screw Model 1955 .45 ACP Target Revolver. I've had it for over 50 years and I don't have a clue as to what to ask for it. I looked at Gun Broker and prices range from $800 to $2200 so I'm totally in a quandary. Here is write-up I did for it. I'd appreciate any assistance to evaluate this beautiful revolver and it will like parting with an old friend.

S&W Model 1955, Caliber .45 ACP. Serial No. S161831. This is a target model with 6-1/2-inch barrel, adjustable rear sight, target grips and wide trigger. Action is extremely smooth with a very light and crisp trigger release. This is an early 5 screw model with the right side of the barrel marked, "45 CAL MODEL 1955. The numbers 75010 and 101351 appear on the on crane and on barrel, respectively. Half moon clips required to fire .45 ACP. Mirror bore with revolver having 99% original finish. This target revolver has an original S&W factory letter which states it was shipped to Klein's Sporting Goods in Chicago on 21 Oct. 1958.

Pretty nice, Bill! Box, papers and tools? Does the letter confirm the configuration?

Nice revolver. Is that a set screw in the trigger guard, to be used as a trigger stop? That is going to reduce the collector's value, but make it a better shooter. The factory put a rod inside of the rebound spring as a trigger stop.

A plus on value for an early 5 screw .45 model of 1955 and its condition; a slight negative for the (apparent) set screw and non-original stocks. I would guess a quick sale at around $1100 and maybe higher if you don't mind waiting. Good luck on your decision.

Very nice Model 1955.

As you've described it, the serial # and Barrel # don't seem to match;

"...serial No. S161831." "The numbers 75010 and 101351 appear on the on crane and on barrel, respectively."

That makes it appear that the frame and barrel serial #s do not match. However, I believe you've mis-read the barrel # as 101351. It would be easy to read the small barrel #s as 101351 instead of 161831. I suggest you use some magnification to confirm the #s match since mis-matched #s would severely hurt the value. The #75010 in the yoke (crane is for Colts) is the assembly # and would not match.

Your description is good and you might include a note on the trigger travel limiting adjustable set screw stop. Also the half moon clips are required to extract cases, but 45 rounds will fire without the clips.

If you confirm the frame and barrel serial #s match then I agree with Alan (murphydog) above on the value and suggest advertising it here in the classifieds section of this forum.

Good luck!

I would go with the "maybe higher if you don't mind waiting" price. $1,100 sounds low. Yes a small mod has been made. The stocks may not be original but they are very desirable. If somebody gripes about them too much, sell them to me and put Pachs on it!

I'll bet Jim is right that you just need to re-read the barrel s/n. I have found that if I stare at the numbers long enough, they come out right.

Well, not pristine in the original box so big bucks from a serious collector. Still a great gun. If mine, I would put it on Brokegunner...I mean Gunbroker started at $999. My guess is it will sell for $1100 - $1200 but you never know with an auction.

I sold a 25-2 three years ago in 97% condition and no box for $1150.

Good catch. You are absolutely right. I miss-read the very small numbers in the ejection rod housing! The Barrel, cylinder and frame all match!
