Did S&W come out with a stainless steel version of the Highway Patrolman and call it the 628? Just like the stainless steel version of the Model 29 was called the 629. Just curious.

No, but there are plenty of model 28s refinished in hard chrome, satin nickel and similar stainless-like finishes that lead to new questions here about once a month.

It's probably a safe bet they might have, had production of the 28 lasted longer. Without dragging my book out, I think the 28s ended production in 1986.

You had the K frame 66s and L frame 686s on the market, so the model 28 kind of became redundant to be made in stainless. This was a time when you could still find a lot of revolvers in police holsters, but more and more were packing autoloaders. The writing was on the wall for the 28. I am a little surprised they lasted as long as the did after the 686 was produced.

The 27 was still the full featured model and still had marketability.

No, but they did produce the 627. That should quench your thirst!

I would guess that since both would be stainless, the difference in fit & finish between a 627 and the proposed 628 wouldn't be great enough to warrant a substantial price reduction, so what would be the point?

Thanks for the input. Yes I can see why they would have gone the route they did. I just think the Highway Patrolman is just a cool revolver. I got my first one just about 50 years ago. A guy wanted an outboard motor in the worst way and sold his 28 to me for $45 and this included a holster!

I think for any real practical use the L frame 357s were the end of the N frame 6 shooters. Kind of a shame the 27s and 28s were iconic guns

Stainless guns were introduced for law enforcement and the 28 was the lower price point to the 27. Model 60’s and 66’s were the mainstay and doubt making a stainless 28 ever came to mind as N frames were loosing their appeal for law enforcement carry. It was years later they even made a stainless 27 and only then in small numbers.

For the longest time I thought of it as a lesser gun. It wasn't until I had one in my hand that I realized the error of my thinking. The model 28 isn't a lesser gun at all, but rather all the gun you need.

The same size, heft, and action of the iconic model 27, but in a stripped down version that made it easier to acquire. A Patrolman on the beat in 1954 could have had this gun in his holster, and his hand nor his holster could have told the difference between it and a model 27.

Not to mention it has a badass name. It even says it on the barrel. If only the model 27 were so cool.
