38 Regulation Police?
Hey everyone, I don't come to post what's it worth often but I have not seen one of these in person before and was wondering.
Its a pre model in 38 S&W, blued, 4" barrel, 5 shot, I/J frame, square butt, flat latch, diamond magnas, all numbers match. I'm nearly positive its a 4 screw since the trigger guard screw is absent but the one at the top of the sideplate/frame is still present. It has a little holster wear and patina but would clean up nice. I'd say 85-90%. Mechanicals, bore and chambers are good.
I think this is a post war 38 regulation police. Price is $300 cash. I have about 600 rounds on hand and another 200 brass. The wife unit likes shooting this caliber. Is this a go for it or pass in the current market?
Thanks in advance

I think that is a decent price for a shooter.

I would have already purchased the revolver at that price. But I'd pay $300 for just about any pistol my wife liked shooting, especially one for which I already reload.

At that price, I say "go for it."
BTW, it is an I frame. The .38 RP didn't migrate to the J frame until c. 1961 (Model 33-1).

It is considered a pre model 33 as you posted, being an early Model of 1953 .38 RP new I frame.
They're usually found with asking prices closer to $500 as you describe it, depending on location and selling platform.

I read $300 and went back to see the OP date. If it isn't gone and you like it take it home. Those post war I frames are great shooters.

It seems to be the consensus here that your next posting should be a range report!

Or at least some pictures post acquisition right??? Condition was a little worse than I initially thought but used that to my advantage and got it for $275. I'll try and make it to the range tomorrow and will give a report after I do
Serial is 755XX

Range report in. Not bad for 7 yds with Fiocchi 146 grain FMJ. Does anyone have an idea what currently available holsters would fit this little gem?

I recently bought a .38 RP in 98% condition, including correctly numbered oversize stocks. Roy dated it to February, 1953. I happily paid $600 for it (out the door).
The weird thing is the barrel is stamped 32 Long CTG. Roy says the most likely cause is someone setting up the die stamp incorrectly and no one noticed. My revolver left Springfield in a 5 unit shipment. No telling if the others were also stamped incorrectly.
No pictures yet. Sorry.

Not too shabby!
You might find a used I frame holster, but it would be at least 50 years old. However, search Google or the on-line auctions for anything made today for a S&W .38 Chiefs Special J frame for a long barrel (not the 2" snubby), that will work fine.

Back in the late '70s-early '80s, I bought a 4" M34. I also bought a 4" Bianchi 5BHL holster in brown. This is a lined high-ride, thumb break. This model was discontinued shortly thereafter. Bianchi continued to offer a strap-over-hammer version.
I sold the M34 a number of years ago, but kept the holster. No, it's not for sale. My .32 Regulation Police rides in it these days.
Check eBay for good, used Bianchi and Safariland leather holsters.
