It is a .38 Combat Masterpiece Model 15-3, and the serial number would indicate production in 1971. As for when it left the Springfield factory, you would have to purchase a letter from the S&W Historical Foundation to find out. The letter would tell you the exact date it shipped and the destination to which it was sent.

We can use serial numbers to surmise the approximate date, but we cannot offer any certainty as to the gun's "birthdate."

I can tell you that the .38 Combat Masterpiece is a wonderful sidearm. Many of us carried them in Vietnam and love the examples we currently own.

For a guestimate of value, we would need to see some pictures. Condition and originality are everything when it comes to prices.

Post the photos and describe condition in detail.

The public won't usually pay inflated collector prices that some seek.

Don't know what the exact market is right now, but I would probably pay $500 for that one, with the wear I see. $475 would probably make me fire up the truck and head to the bank

It looks good from your photos. Keep in mind that selling price is related to where you are located and the number of people interested. Where I am located that would be on a dealer shelf for $450 to $500. Figure a dealer would pay half that.

I agree. $500 is about right.
