Default S&W Pre- Model 10

Found this one in a local pawn shop this morning. Something about it just spoke to me. I know the stocks are wrong but they seem to have been with the revolver a long time. Serial number C3369X. Although it’s not an exact science can anyone give me an approximate ship month? It should have shipped in late 48. Although I know with S&W anything is possible.

My 2 inch M&P C53720 shipped March 1949 if that gives you some idea of ship time.

Thanks, I was hoping it would be around Dec. 1948. That would be the birth month and year of my mama.

38 M&P serial C33066 was shipped in April 1948. .38 M&P serial C34206 was shipped in November 1948.

It is a possibility, but no more than that. I show a C 30xxx shipping in September 1948 and a C 44xxx range gun shipping in January 1949. That definitely puts December 1948 in play for C 3369x, although it’s more likely earlier. You’d have to gamble on a letter.

Thanks so much for the information. You can always count on you guys. Mechanically, it is excellent and has a very smooth action. Since it’s a shooter, I cannot wait to take it to the range.

I know where this ship date comes from, but I believe it’s an error in the records. That serial could not yet have existed at that time. In April 1948 S-prefix production was still ongoing and guns in the upper S 900-thousands were shipping.

Ok. I guess Roy messed up. But, you're right. At that date, any C prefix would have an X or XX numerical.

I have a C prefix gun that was shipped to Detroit PD in early 1948. I queried Roy on this ship date at the time I got the gun. Roy said that C series production did start on special orders before the S serials were finished.

C1 was assembled on March 22, 1948. And yes, S prefix M&Ps were still being assembled at that time. The S guns were still shipping through the summer of 1948.

Of course, we don't know for certain that C1 was the first C prefix frame assembled. But that seems to be implied in Hellstrom's notes.

I don‘t know whether you showed your gun or whether it was yet another case, but I remember a previous case of a C-prefix four- or five-digit serial that Roy placed, and insisted was correct, in February or March 1948. Let‘s just say there will always be some cases where disagreements won‘t be resolved, for lack of everybody having access to the same data.

FWIW: I have C44008 (Detroit PD) whipped in Feb. 1948, which match the agency blue card.

Which style of hammer does that gun have?

Other than the odd .32 M&P, I've only seen a one C prefix M&P with the long action. It has the number C58672 and is a 2" example that shipped on April 20, 1949!

Default Pre model 10

Mine is a 2” nickel C91831. Lettered it for fun. Ship date was 11/28/1949. Learned it was shipped to a hdwe store located on historic 2nd Ave of NAshville. Being I am from NAshville made that interesting as it stayed in NAshville for its entire life until I obtained it in 2018.

I know. That’s why I asked.

If that gun C 44008 shipped in February 1948 and that is confirmed by a PD document, CAN it already have the new hammer?

One would think not. According to Hellstrom's notes, S990184 was the first M&P assembled with the high speed hammer, on April 7, 1948.

I've never seen revolver #C1, so I don't know what hammer it had. But it wasn't assembled until March 22, according to Roy. I do know that C2260 (a 6" M&P) had the high speed hammer. It also still has the one line address.
