S&W Pre model 10/ pre m&p? serial number
Hey all looking to find the date for a S&W pre model 10 i picked up
Serial number is 3994xx

Most likely early 1922. The serial places it shortly before the Made in USA stamping began to appear on the frame. It‘s too early to be called a pre-Model 10, although it is an earlier ancestor.
Looks to be in very nice shape, including the checkering of the stocks.

Thanks! It looks to be all original from what I can tell it appears to be all original, machining marks still evident( still in the white on the tip of the ejector rod) all stampings appear sharp on the edges, I am unsure on the stocks as the look to me like maybe theyve been refinished, just seem rounded in spots.

I agree it is a very nice example of the type. The stocks are correct for 1922ish. If you look on the inside of the right panel, you might find the serial number of the gun, written with a pencil. It might take bright light from a good flashlight, shown across the surface at an acute angle, for the number to show up.

That revolver is typically called a 38 M & P. It is catalogued as a Model 1905, Change 4.

Here is a twin to yours. Serial number 384433, shipped May, 1921. Your M&P is in great condition and I bet it is also a good shooter.

You can shoot + P if you want. These guns were designed to shoot a significantly higher pressure cartridge than the ones we currently buy. Before World War II S&W said that these frames were capable of shooting 38 Special Hi Velocity..

Personally, 38 Special standard velocity and lead bullets is my preference. They can be particularly accurate with HBWC, plus make nice round holes in paper.
