S&W 22 Revolver
My father in law handed down this S&W 22 Revolver. Can't find a model # on it. on the barrel it says: "H22 long rifle CTG". The serial # has 5 digits, 340xx. It looks to have a 5.25" barrel. I have a S&W 38 that has "CTG" on it and it's a pre-model 10. Can anyone tell me what the model # is, when it was made, what it's worth, etc. Thanks, Bernie

I am thinking that the only 22LR that has that serial number is actually a K34,0XX? The "H" is actually an ampersand that appears on the front and rear of the stamping. If so, it would be a K-22 Masterpiece, manufactured in 1948. We need the serial number on the 38 M&P in order to give you information.

AND---------------
-------and measure the barrel length from the front of the cylinder to the front of the barrel. That should get you pretty close to 6"------and prevent any further hair loss for the folks that have been tearing theirs out.
Ralph Tremaine
And the H on the barrel is usually called a dingbat-----any of several symbols used by printers to denote the beginning/end of a line of type (my best recollection). Gary called it an ampersand because it's getting late, and he's tired of coping with the three seasons where he lives----pre-winter, winter, and pre-pre-winter.
(I know about these things---having resided in North Dakota for a spell----North Dakota, where the state tree is a telephone pole.)

Here is a post for needed ID information:
To IDENTIFY your Gun >
The key here is the 6" barrel in .22 LR - if you give us the correct full SN from the flat bottom of the grip frame.
If it is 340xx, a .22/32 Target from the mid-1950s (six shot, small frame).
K340xx, a K-22 Masterpiece from the early post WW II era (six shot, medium frame).
M340xx should be stamped MOD 35-1 on the frame under the barrel (similar in size to the .22/32 Target above).
CTG is short for cartridge, a leftover from the olden days. Perhaps they thought someone would try to muzzleload it if they left it off?

Pictures are really needed for value estimates.

Art Doc's instructions will work if you first scroll down below the text box and click on Go Advanced to open the advanced editor. You can follow his instructions or click on the paper clip icon on the top row of editor icons. This is the attachment app and lets you browse to, select and upload up to 5 pictures as attachments. Make sure your pictures are sized to 1920x1080 pixels before you try to upload them or the forum server will choke. Use Windows Paint to resize them if necessary.

Small for my old eyes but it appears to be a K22 Masterpiece. Serial should have a K prefix. Very good and desired gun. I hate to offer value estimates because I always go too low.

Yeah it's an early post-WWII K-22 with sharp shouldered magnas. Can't make out much more than that. Fair price is about $800 unless there's a problem with the gun. These are desirable guns.

$200 - $2,000??? All I want is approx or value range. Not selling, just for insurance.

The Doc is correct. This is a K-22 Masterpiece, built after the war and before c. 1956 (probably 1948). There will definitely be a K at the beginning of the serial number. It is a swivel hole away from the first digit of the serial number (although there will be no hole). No doubt that is why you missed it.

$800 is a fair estimate as noted above.

Don't get mad at us. You can claim any value you want.
PS: Gun values do vary that wildly based on a number of criteria.
I'm out.
