Cool Recovered Stolen

Trying to post pictures of this newly recovered stolen (I think) M&P. Actually in pretty good shape! Serial Number: 1214##. Our evidence vault people are going to contact the owner to return it.

Was it locked to a bicycle when you found it?

Any marks on the gun were there previously. We don't mark our evidence that way.

Isn't there a law against those rubber grips? Probably should destroy them.

Tongue in cheek. Most people on this forum think guns in evidence get hit with a grinder . . .

No, no, no! Not a grinder, an electro pencil. BTW, my department DID have an electro pencil that we would allow the public to use to mark their property.

In the 23 plus years I worked there, I never saw it used on a firearm.

De gustibus non disputandum erat. I suppose I shouldn't post a photo of my unblemished M29-2 with what I consider classic grips. Hint: They are not blemished by being afflicted with S&W "stocks."

A museum I belong to received the donation of three weapons from a WWII vet who brought them back or was able to keep what was issued, a Walther P38, a 1911 and an M1, all in great shape.

Except for his driver license number which he engraved on all three.

Some departments mark recovered firearms. I have a friend in Lake Charles that had his Hi-Standard target pistol returned and it had an inventory # or case # electro penciled on it.

North Carolina to Wyoming and back. Kind of wish that it could tell its tale.

My Ruger Blackhawk was stolen in 1995 in Baton Rouge LA.
25 years later it turned up in a pawn shop in Kingman AZ.
The officer who filed the initial report , returned it ... he remembered filing the report and still had the photo's I gave him ...I was at the same office address and same phone number 25 years later, He called talked to me and came over ... It didn't have any ID numbers or marks on it ... in fact it looked just like it did 25 years ago , even the sights were set to my pet handload .

You aren't going to believe how happy the owner is going to be to get his S&W back ... I almost cried .
Bless all of you in Law Enforcement.

We didn't scratch them up in Wyoming 40 years ago, either.

"Officer, how can you identify this as the weapon you recovered from the defendant?"

"By the manufacturer's serial number and description of the firearm as recorded in my contemporaneous field notes."

I have a couple of stolen firearm stories. The weirdest one makes me think all the time about buying used firearms. I get called to retrieve a Sig handgun from a pawn shop. I walk into the pawn shop to find the store owner I know and the customer. They were confused on this one. Sometime around 2005 the shop takes the handgun in and the person defaults on the loan. The shop owner did not remember the guy. The gun is twice checked for hits. The gun is sold to a man who keeps it for a few years and decides to trade it back to the shop. Bing, there is the NCIC hit. An investigator a couple hundred miles away comes for the gun and tells me the victim saw the gun in their drawer sometime around the early 2000s and then noticed it was missing in 2006ish. It was reported stolen in 2006 and the person suspected of stealing, a relative of the victim, died of a drug overdose a year later.

Had 4 guns recovered by police and returned. Three in first year and one after 18 years. All looked good with no extra marks. Twenty still missing.

During a drug buy both suspects shot at each other. The guy I was interviewing had been shot in the upper arm and needed immediate emergency treatment. I had secured his firearm and completed my report after the suspect went into emergency surgery. When I ran the serial number it came back as registered to a fellow Deputy! When I called him to verify the information , to make a long story short, his son's time on earth became the subject of another conversation!

Both firearms had been stolen but not in the system. Big surprise!! This "shoot out" was over a small quantity of marijuana which would have been a misdemeanor until the guns came out!

Just another day in paradise!

P.S. My suspect may have lost his arm from a direct hit to the large bone. The X-ray showed a space where there should have been bone! Must have taken a deal since I wasn't summoned to court!

I've been told that the gun along with at least one other had been on display at a local museum and stolen from there. The funny part is it's described as a Victory model (which it obviously is not)- the serial number however is correct for the gun we have. Our detective contacted the son of the owner (possible dad has passed away) and he confirmed it was the same pistol. Son obviously isn't a gun guy!

Many years ago, a guy I worked with had all of his firearms confiscated after he was arrested on a domestic dispute. When he finally got his firearms back, all of them had been electro penciled with the PD evidence numbers.

My neighbor had all his firearms confiscated after the PD came to do wellness check on him that had been prompted by a relatives concern for his safety. All the firearms were released to me for safe keeping, none had been marked in any way. I guess it just depends on what PD you are dealing with.

The really sad part was when his parents came to the office to pick up his belongings I had a brief discussion with them. Really nice upper middle class couple unaware their son was involved in drugs and guns. Life goes on>>>!!
