There is no list of part numbers that I know of. Some parts had assembly numbers and some also had the frame serial number. I believe the assembly numbers cannot be tracked. The number you posted could be an early serial...but, from what model? I suspect it is an assembly number. Can you post a picture?

40330 is outside the range for Registered Magnums as the earliest ones have a serial number in the 45000 range.

What about barrels, cylinders, yoke arms, ejector stars, and right grip panels, Ken? Almost forgot about rear target sight assemblies...

If it chambers only a .38 Special and is non-recessed, it is from a .38/44 Heavy Duty or Outdoorsman. If it chambers .357 it could be from one of those (with the charge holes reamed longer) or an RM. (I have not seen a .357 HD cylinder and don’t know if these are counterbored when modified.)
Sounds like a perfect question for “Ask Roy Jinks”.

SN 46310 belongs to Reg Mag 176 according to Mullins book. Originally shipped as 8.75" bbl, now with 7.5" bbl and factory rework mark.

Ok, then. I usually don't re-read the original post, so I missed the update. That SN is too low for an NRM. So, it either has to be for a RM or a .38/44 Heavy Duty or Outdoorsman, as Alan says.

As an aside, what is billed as TABLE 5-Serial Number Table for Prewar Nonregistered Magnum Revolvers appears in Jinks' late 80's article.
Ralph Tremaine
As does TABLE 4-Registration Numbers of the Known 144 Nickle----and TABLE 1-Registered Magnums Equipped with Humpback Hammers Production: February, 1938
And speaking of February, 1938, Jinks did another such article essentially updating the original. The update was published in the SWCA Journal---Volume 44, Number2, Summer 2010.
Between these two articles and D. B. Wesson's Scrapbook, it's reasonably fair to say, there's nothing worth knowing about Registered Magnums that's not been written down------although I haven't noticed a final number of nickel guns with Humpback Hammers.

REG. #2 has serial number 45756 so the reposted serial number falls well with the range of Registered Magnums. If the cylinder has counterbored charge holes and will chamber a .357 Magnum cartridge, it is from a Registered Magnum.

So Randy, we have established per Doc44’s post #10 above that “if the cylinder has counterbored charge holes and will chamber a .357 Magnum cartridge, it is from a Registered Magnum.” If so, then per S&W_ucla’s post #7 above we have further established that “SN 46310 belongs to Reg Mag 176 according to Mullins book. Originally shipped as 8.75" bbl, now with 7.5" bbl and factory rework mark.”
So what exactly do you have; just the cylinder from Reg 176? Do you have a picture of it?

RM, serial number 46310, had major repairs done in November 1965. New bolster bushing, new cylinder ( original cylinder damaged by firing pin), new cylinder stop, new rear sight slide, and new Magna stocks. The frame and barrel were also refinished in blue. Total cost of repairs and parts was $30.07.
The old parts were probably returned by S&W and eventually sold by an owner of the Registered Magnum.

$50 shipped. Not bad. Looks like firing pin dimples between cylinders. Nice find!

UPDATE- I have heard from the owner of Reg Mag 176. Evidently the SN in Mullins book is incorrect. SN 46310 is NOT the SN, 46510 is correct SN. Other data, ship date, location, rework, condition is correct. So OP's cylinder is for a RM, but it's not RM 176. Oh Well.....

Sounds like my RM barrel and pair of King front ramps I’ve picked up. One day it’ll make sense.
