Default Post your Highway Patrolman - Wearing Stags

In another recent threat, I posted how much I like the combo of the Highway Patrolman matte finish with a beautiful set of magna stags. I'd love to see any others that are so configured.

I'll start us off with my first 5-screw gun ever purchased, a Feb 1955 Highway Patrolman that came to me in March 2007 for $290 delivered. It sported mismatched beat up diamond magnas and I knew the moment it came home that I wanted some of Patrick Grasshorn's beautiful elk grips. So I sent him (Executioner on the Forum) a PM, described what I wanted, sent him a check and a month later these beauties arrived and fit like they were made for the gun. Although I often play "musical grips" with some of my guns, these elk magnas have been one with this gun ever since I cinched up the grip screw. I think they are there to stay. BTW - like the grips, the vintage box is a later addition to the package, and it adds some color to the photos.

Looking forward to seeing your HP's with stags.

A t grip would be the ticket on that one. I really like the matte blue, though I’ve only one,a 5 screw 4” .22.

Ok, I may have posted this before. Earlier this year I purchased this 28-2. My LGS gave me a deal, as I support his store by buying everything from ammo to cleaning supplies, along with the occasional firearm (when funds permit). I expected to pay $800, but only paid $500 plus tax. With the money I saved, I ordered these from Mr. Grashorn just before Memorial Day. they came in a few weeks later. I have since learned that this revolver shipped in May 1976.

Richard,

This one was my grandfather's. He won it off of a young TX Dept of Public Safety Trooper in a poker game. It is a first year Highway Patrolman. It still had the numbers matching diamond magnas when I got. He gave it to me as a police academy graduation present. The stocks were added for a BBQ event. The holster is by Alamo, here in San Antonio, TX many years ago.....

Well, not sure if this is what you expected, but it started out as a Model 28-2!

The elk grips are from Ken and the grip adapter is a Tyler.

My all time favorite pair of "keepers" on "Bernie's gun" (first year mfg HP). They usually reside on my 1954 mfg Heavy Duty, but were willing to travel for a photo shoot

I don't have a Highway Patrolman, but I do have an N-Frame .357 with what you could generously call a "Matte Finish", I mean it's not shiny any more...

Does it count?

S303549 Model 28-2 shipped in 3/68. The grips are from Ken Driskell bigmtnman. It is one of my favorite shooters. The badges are from my Dad. He served from 1954 to 1974. He polished all his equipment nearly every day. Resulting in the state seal being polished off the badges. Looks like I need to get out the Simichrome and clean them up. RIP 120.

Default Grasshorn Grips

Here are two of my M28s with grips custom made by Patrick. A number of years ago I acquired two blocks of Alaskan fossil bone (25,000+ years old ?), from a knife maker at a gun show in Birmingham, AL., price was $40 each. I had forgotten about them and Patrick has made me several pairs of staghorn grips for my N frames. I rediscovered them and called Patrick and inquired if he could make me a set of grips for the two N frames using the old material. He warned that when the saw cuts into the material it may turn to dust. I said "lets do it". It all worked out great as you can see. I have posted these guns several years ago, new photos are a bit clearer.

Ken:

I just look at it that you're newer to the party. I have admired your work for a while now and have seen multiple sets that you have offered up for sale in the classifides section that I would love to own... I just discovered them AFTER someone else said... "I'll take them."

Thank you for adding your talent and craftsmanship to this collecting passion we share. Keep the beautiful work coming, because there are lots more HP's that need some stags...

Got some new old grips, this thread inspired me to snag them off of ebay.

It also just snowed.

I own neither a Model 28 nor any stag grips. But I do like these.

What material for the grips? Bone?

Kinda tough to do since I do not have any stags. How about some Culina toasted maple instead?

Caleb - I know that that RM has the patina that only years of hard use can bestow on a gun, but it hurts me a little on the inside seeing it carefully dropped in the snow like that... Please tell me it was coated in RenWax or RemOil before it took the plunge and that it received the warm towel treatment after coming in from the cold?

Haha, yes, RenWax is this gun's constant companion.

When it came in it was carefully dried and then got a nice bath in Breakfree CLP. Then it was tucked into its warm gunroom (which has it's own radiator in it and stays toasty).

Default more of Ken's art

First pic is a 4 screw, '56 maybe, and the second one is a 28-2 from about '77-'80. Both HP's are in excellent condition, have original grips for both tucked away. Also have a round butt 28, waiting for the "right" pair of Ken's with a lot of aged bark.

Just reread Guy’s post, elk stag from Ken.

Mea culpa!

This HP doesn’t qualify for this section but maybe the stags do?

Funny thing is I bought them on eBay a few years ago to complete a stag set for my K22, K32, K38 triplets. They were represented as K frame. I'm still looking for a nice set of K's.

How do you “antique” a set of stag grips? See #25 for Tom’s great grips. Great thread guys. Thanks for the pics. Dave

Default Antiquing Stag Grips

Thinns, here is a photo of a pair of elk grips that I antiqued a few years back. It is a simple process: remove all wax, then soak in strong black coffee or tea, remove and air dry when the desired effect is obtained. After drying is done, a good coating of wax is in order. Here is a photo of one of my N frame 44s wearing them.

I'm a little late to the party but the grips were just delivered today. The revolver, despite my poor photographic skills, is actually in mint condition.
