Nickel Guns "N" Indicator
How long have they been stamping an "N" on the rear of the cylinder to indicate a nickel gun. Currently looking at a gun from the mid-50's and in the pictures forwarded I don't see that stamping. OTOH, there is no indication this is a refinish - all roll marks are crisp and edges sharp.
Adios,
Pizza Bob

You need to have the gun in hand to see the "N" you are referring to. It is generally located as a tiny "N" at the rear of the cylinder UNDER the extractor star.
This is my 1947 factory nickel M&P.

I checked six 44 Magnums with a nickel finish. The two from 1956, one from 1957 and one from 1969 have an N stamped on the surface of the cylinder under the extractor. One from 1972 and one from 1973 have an N stamped on the rear outer surface of the cylinder (visible). So, for the 44 Magnum, this was begun in 1970 or the early 1970s.
The most reliable place for the N is on the lower left hand corner of the grip frame.
