It is a Netflix streaming original. I’m not sure there is an official legal DVD, although there seem to be web services wanting to sell you on-demand DVDs. No idea how legal that is.

I got hooked up with NetFlix just a couple of weeks ago. The first movie I watched was The Highwaymen.

I refuse to pick apart the gunfight in Open Range because it might dampen my enjoyment of a danged good western.

Same goes for Highwaymen - the best the Public Enemy era movie I've ever seen.

(PS - If the Beatty/Dunaway movie were paper I wouldn't wipe with it.)

Without Sam Peckinpah being inspired by Arthur Penn‘s work, we might not have had the almost antiseptically clean Westerns of the 60s shook up by the slow motion death and flying blood of “The Wild Bunch”.

Peckinpah was inspired by Penn’s use of a technique pioneered by a Polish filmmaker in the ‘50s: using condoms filled with fake blood, and putting them on actors, to explode when the gun shots rang. Immediate gore and blood. It was a shock in "Bonnie and Clyde." Indeed, most criticism at the time focused on the film being too violent, not glamorizing grubby criminals.

Not to mention the demonization of Frank Hamer.

I think that probably has to do with the fact that most Americans had no idea who Frank Hamer was, and likely still don‘t unless they happened to watch “The Highwaymen“.

Loved the movie, seen it several times. The gun store scene is definitely my favorite. Except the BAR, unfortunately, I own about every gun on the list, many inherited from my grandfather. I don’t think I ever missed with my old Remington M11.

I am actually surprised that the characters in Highwaymen were portrayed the way they were in a 2018 movie.

I've seen that movie 3 times and I will watch it again.

I went to Ray's starting in the 1980's and have been there as recently as a year ago. Ray used to sit in a central location where he could see most of the store. The DPD had some special deal with Ray's. There were usually DPD officers in there shopping. It was a much rougher neighborhood back then.

Barrow's service station was a real estate office last year when I saw it. Doesn't look much different.

I'm not much of a movie or tv fan, but I am a voracious reader and will be looking the book mentioned shortly.
However I got a trial membership at Netflix so I could watch The Highwayman. Twice.

From wiki. The Highwaymen had a limited theatrical release in the United States on March 15, 2019 before being released digitally on March 29, 2019 on Netflix.

Maney Gault had great lines in the movie. The exchange between him and Hamer that resulted in Hamer taking Gault on for the mission was priceless. Harrelson was perfectly cast.

In March 2019 I travelled to Austin for a family wedding. Since I was in the area I decided to visit Frank Hamers grave. Several people at the wedding asked whose grave I went to see, and when I told them Frank Hamer they would reply “who?”. I expected that from the other Pennsylvania guests, but the Texans were just as bad.

I have a DVD of a documentary film Frank Hamers family had produced to correct the record after the Beatty film. I think the title was “TheReal Bonnie and Clyde” or something like that. Until “The Highwaymen” it was the only decent movie about Frank Hamer.

Costner doesn't say a word in this scene and what he does is still some of the finest acting I've ever seen.

Really enjoyable, well done flick and highly reccomended to anyone.

Lots of us here already know about Frank Hamer and how the old film slandered him--it's nice to see him get some proper credit in this well done movie. It's been a popular Netflix production so now a lot more people are familiar with the kind of man he really was.

I think we need to occasionally remind ourselves that this is after all a specialty interest and an aspect of history we have spent so much time with that we've come to assume everybody should be familiar.

I had the reverse experience with "The Queen's Gambit" recently. I slid into watching it coincidentally, greatly enjoyed the show, but know so little about the world of chess that I had to go to the web to figure out whether it was a docudrama, partly fictionalized, or entirely made up. It turned out to be the last one, but I would not have been able to tell. Anyone a bit interested in chess probably knew which character was inspired by which legendary player.

Peckinpah was a genius film maker to bad he got into the booze and white powder and flamed out so young.

I really enjoyed The Highwaymen and have probably watched it four or five times. The one aspect that has bothered me is that they made Hamer appear to be rusty with his shooting. I realize it’s Hollywood artistic license and was supposed to be humorous, but I didn’t really like the scene where he had trouble hitting the Coke bottle thrown in the air or later, hitting the sign. Hamer was known to be one of the best shots of the Texas Rangers and I could have done without that. Otherwise, a very good movie.
