Sorry for your loss. I lost one of my grandfathers shortly before I left for 'Nam. The other one passed away a couple years after I got back. It's nice to have a few things that were theirs. It helps with the memories.

Your .32-20 Hand Ejector probably shipped in the early 1920s. It lacks the Made in U.S.A. on the right side, which was added in about May, 1922. I show 96786 and 99052 shipping in April, 1921, and 106236 and 106360 shipping in February, 1922. Those bracket yours, so you are in that ballpark. Remember, however, that S&W did not ship in serial order, so without a letter, we are just making educated guesses.

The service stocks on your grandfather's revolver appear to be original.

Thank you jack for your information and quick response, i see your airforce symbol too, thank you from active duty navy. Is ammo still available in 32-20? Ive tried looking online without much luck. I was give two boxes of remington ammo with it

The 32-20 or Winchester Model is a rather neat revolver. The first revolver I ever fired was one. Probably what started me on the road to impaired hearing and my fondness for S&W revolvers.

Ammunition is available but possibly unobtainable given the present circumstances. Reloading is a great option but components are in tight supply.

With the 32 WCF, make sure you have good hearing protection. Muffs and plugs is not uncalled for, they are loud.

Enjoy Granddad’s revolver and remember him when you shoot it.

Nice old S&W. I have three of them and shoot with my own reloads.
It's kinda tough to find 32-20 aka 32 WCF (not 32 Special) ammo even in the best of times. You will want ammo loaded with lead bullets, not with jacketed, mainly because lead is easier on the bore. Stay away from anything marked "rifle use only". It will most likely be jacketed bullet ammo that is loaded up to higher velocities than is safe for an old revolver.

Yes, lead ammo is easier on old barrels. Some factory ammo, like Remington, is marked "rifle." That is because the .32-20 was introduced as a rifle cartridge in the Winchester 1873 lever action. The box should be marked "safe in all firearms." Remington .32-20s can be found with either lead or a jacketed bullet. Winchester ammo can be found with either lead or copper washed lead bullets.

The ammo to avoid has a jacketed HOLLOW POINT bullet and has a "HV" (High Velocity) stamp on the base. This HV ammo is intended for the stronger Winchester 1892 and Marlin 1894 rifles.
