That is a .38 Military & Police from 1946. This model did not get a model number until 1957/58.

Welcome to the Forum.
If the grips are factory, there should a serial number stamped on the inside of the right one. Absalom's info above is correct.

Great j ob on the description!
Some would call this a "pre-Model 10" but don't tell anyone I said that.

I never liked the whole "Pre Model" thing but if one must, only the M&Ps made late 1948 up to the use of the model number can properly be called "Pre 10s." Before that is a totally different design.

The OP's revolver would still have the pre WW II long action. Most collectors call the .38 M&Ps with the short action, introduced in 1948, as being the "pre Model 10s."

.38 M&P revolvers in the S827xxx serial range were shipping in May, 1946. I have one in my collection just a few digits lower than yours that shipped that month.
Guns were not shipped in serial order. However, in the spring of 1946, pent up demand from the war period was causing S&W to ship M&Ps out the door at a feverish rate. Chances are very good that yours was in a May shipment. Only a letter can tell you for certain.
