1950 v.1955
I had my models 1950 and 1955 at the range yesterday. I have never shot them both at the same range session. Both are great revolvers, but have very different shooting characteristics. The side by side photo of the barrel profiles speaks volumes as to why. They are beauties, and made when the whole factory was a "performance center." The 1950 is an all target variation.

I can hit the back wall at range equally well with both, but I like the 1950 more, and shoot it better.

Loving those unrelieved diamond target stocks!!! I've been looking for a 5 screw 1950/1955 shooter for some time now, I'm jealous.

Thank you for this interesting report and the detail pictures.
Regarding the stocks on the two, it appears the 1950 set, with relief in the left, is slimmer than the 1955's. Is this so? I ask because my hands are medium and most N-frame targets are a bit too much of a good thing.
Thanks.

My two would look similar with the exception of the 1950 .45 Target Model (Light Barrel) "Pre-Model 26" having diamond magna stocks.
I can't document which one I shoot best. I like shooting the light barrel over the model 55. Although, I like the looks of the heavy barrel over the light barrel.

The Target stocks shown on the 1950 gun are not original as those guns all came with factory magnas. The stocks on the 1955 gun are most probably original, non-relieved targets.

Actually, the gun lettered as being all target.

I really like ACP revolvers. Those are both nice.
I am looking for some version of the 1950 Target Model to go with my Model 1950 Army and my Model 25-2. And a few other long action ACP revolvers.

As I stated above, mine has magna stocks. Below is a pic of the applicable section to my letter describing them as checkered as opposed to magna or target. Also below is a pic of the revolver.

The question is, why did the 1950 become the Model 26 but the 1955 became the Model 25?

The Model 1950 Target, Model 1950 Army and Model 26’s all came with the tapered barrel. The Model 1955 and the Model 25-2 all had the heavy barrel.

A guy here said that when he got into target shooting, he could not afford an accurized 1911 for Bigbore, so he bought a 1955 and shot it into NRA Master. Still has it in Excellent condition, but it has been shot a lot more than its unmarred finish would indicate.

Not ACP, but I have a Mod 1950 and a 25-5 (both in 45 LC). I find I shoot the Mod 1950 a little better (tighter groups) but not so much better that I'd say this or that is a "noticeably better gun".

I acquired this 25-2 (serial number N25000) over twenty years ago and have shot it many times over the years. With the long barrel, recoil and muzzle blast are almost imperceptible, even with +P+ ammunition.

Yes, each time he mentions it! The great thing is he is willing to share it with all of us, photographically.
Even those of us (me) who prefer the 45 ACP version can appreciate the rare bird.

I do have to get a bull barrel 45ACP at some point. but my only Mod 1955's are 44 Mags. All my 45acp guns are Mod 1950's.
You can probably tell, I really like Mod 1950's

They are great revolvers, the 1950s. And I enjoy each time you post yours.
I have a 1950 Army version and looking for some flavor of 1950 with target sights and chambered in 45 ACP. It’s out there and I will find it!
