The extractor rod which screws into the star is right hand thread. To remove it, put 3 empty cartridge casings into every other chamber in the cylinder to brace the star. Then, put a wooden clothes pin on the extractor knob and clamp that with pliers. Grasp the cylinder and rotate the pliers to the left to unscrew. If it doesn't unscrew fairly easily, you may have to put some penetrating oil on the extractor/star connection.

Thank you very much, I appreciate it. I have various vise jaw protectors and will opt to just clamp the rod in a vise but that is a very creative idea to remember for gripping the the extractor knob!
Thank you,
Robert

Yes, a vice works if you pad it with rubber or leather to avoid marring the extractor knob. If you are going to do more work on S&W handguns, you might find The S&W Revolver-A Shop Manual by Jerry Kuhnhausen to be an excellent reference source.
