32 long S&W revolver 6 shot
Can anyone give me an idea approx what year this gun was made? Patent Feb 08.06 Sept 14.09 Dec 29.14. The serial number is 292000 but is on the inside of the grip and on the cylinder chamber. Is this a regulation police gun? Thanks.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! Yes, it is a .32 Regulation Police. I believe it was made in 1919 but someone with a database may have more accurate information.

Thanks! Do you know about what it’s valued at? Someone is interested in selling it.

Well, it would be better if we had sharper, better lighted pictures to gauge condition. But, from what I see, I'd put it in the Fair to Good category and around $400+/-. It really needs to be cleaned up and rust removed to show better.

Welcome to the forum. I personally wouldn't go any higher than $250- 300 given the condition, but depending on your location it could sell for more or less.

At $150, grab it. When you need help cleaning it up there are lots of folks with tons of knowledge on this site.

It's definitely a Regulation Police from somewhere about the end of WW I to the mid-20s... I'm not good on those dates. As for price, if it is functional and complete and you can get it for $150, then it is a good buy. You can clean it up and give it a little TLC and easily flip it for double that, but you probably won't want to give it up after you have a chance to shoot it and enjoy it. Right now I'm sort of I frame poor, but at that price, I'd buy it without even wondering about it.

Welcome to the Forum. In dating most S&Ws, there are several things to look for to help narrow down when the gun was made. Obviously the last patent date indicates the earliest it could have been made, in this case 1914. Almost all gold medallion stocks were made from 1910 to 1920, so almost certainly it was not a 1920s gun. Lastly, the database for this model indicates that similar serial numbers shipped in 1919, so that is as close as one can get without a factory letter.
One interesting issue is that the gun has single screw gold medallion stocks and, if the butt has a rebated frame (a notch half-way down the backside of the butt-frame, those stocks are scarce. In 1920 the factory switched over to similar style stocks without the medallion. Before around 1918 the stocks were the same as what was on the Single Shot pistols, with two screw stocks and medallion. Interesting that that style stocks are found on a gun that early. Common thinking is that those stocks were not found on 32 RPs until around serial number 260,000.
Before deciding if it is a good deal or not, one has to decide why they want it?? Value-wise the price is good, but there are many S&Ws out there that are good deals. If you collect of want to collect these early Regulation Police guns, then by all means buy it, but if you want it to take to the range and shoot boxes of ammo or use it as a self-defense gun, there are a lot better choices out there. A revolver that is over a hundred years old and has encountered many things over its life can and will break someday, some parts are near impossible to find today and a gun this old should not be considered for self-defense because of the age and reliability issues that are yet unknown.

I have one made about 1914. It is a good accurate shooter. My standard load per Hatcher is 2 grains of Bullseye with a 98 grain semi-wadcutter. Zips along at @650 fps, and shoots to point of aim at 15 yards. S&W did a grand job of regulating them!

They're good little shooters. Fun at the range. But as glowe says, you probably should look for at least a .38 for a self defense gun.
I wouldn't pass that up for $150.
