Default What do I actually have ?

I'm fairly green to old Smith's and identification of what I have I believe it is a model 1905, highly not sure of that though. It is stamped winchester 32 ctg. It looks to be a 5 inch barrel or so. It is chrome plated with peral handles and gold colored Smith medallions in the grips. What actual year was it made ? Serial number is 17928.

Sort of like this? Round Butt?

Mod 1902 32-20 AKA 32 Winchester. First change. Probably from 1905 or so.

Pictures would really help identify it.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! You have a .32-20 (.32 Winchester or .32 WCF) Military & Police revolver from probably 1905. It is probably nickel plated, not chrome, and the grips sound like they are factory originals. We need pictures.

It's exactly as the photo you have posted. And it is extremely in nice condition. What is something like this worth? I want to make sure I didnt pay too much.

You can either load them on an image hosting site like imgur etc and link them here, or when you post, look below for the "Manage attachments" box, click that, pick a photo on your computer and and upload the images directly here.

Does it have an adjustable sight in the back and a pinned front sight? Or fixed sights? Original finish or refinished?
Value can go from a couple hundred to a couple thousand depending on condition and how its configured.

Which is why we need pictures- condition governs value.

Sorry, was typing and missed your post.
Fixed sights

Looks partly refinished. (trigger and hammer shouldn't be blued) The nickel finish is OK but not primo.

The grips alone are worth 250

Whole gun is probably in the $500 range max. Refinishes kill value to collectors

I'd take those grips off (very carefully!)and keep them, put on some round butt K frame grips (wood or hard rubber) and have fun shooting it.

32-20's are great range guns. 👍

Everyone has already identified what you have. Mine is a 32/20 Hand Ejector, Model 1905, 3rd Change. The 32/20 round was developed by Winchester in the late 1800s as a small game round for the model 94.

I suspect you meant to type Model 92? I don't think Winchester's Model 94 was ever chambered in .32-20.

Actually, while the Model 1892 Winchester was often chambered for the .32-20 cartridge, the round was developed quite a bit earlier. It was first chambered in the Model 1873, in 1881. Also the Model 1885 Low Wall single shot rifle was very frequently chambered for the .32 Winchester cartridge (AKA 32-20). In fact, more .32-20 Winchester Model 1885s were made than for any other cartridge.

Thanks for setting the cartridge development straight, I thought I read it was developed for the 94. I stand corrected.

Here's the way to remember it, Chief.

The Model 1894 was designed to handle rifle length cartridges, eg., 32-40, .38-55, .30-30, etc.

The Model 1892 was designed to handle revolver length cartridges, eg., the .25-20, .32-20, .38-40, .44-40, etc.

Why? Just a sample picture to demonstrate the process- I always save pics of cool pieces. Only the Model of 1902 is mine.
