Default What is this SW?

I'm not real adept at identifying older Smiths. Can anyone tell me what this is? It's a .38 sp., according to the owner. I haven't examined the gun.

It appears to be a Military and Police, (M&P), 38 S&W Special with a 6 or 6 1/2” barrel built after 1950 but before 1958. A serial number will allow others to narrow the time frame.

It appears to be in nice condition.

It's a 6" .38 Military & Police K frame. The first photo suggests it was made after the early 1950s (ramp front sight, if original) and the second doesn't show a model number, indicating it was made before 1958. The stocks are from no earlier than the late 1960s.

And it needs a good cleaning.

I missed the ramp sight. I saw the speed action hammer.

Give us the serial number from the butt. It will have a C prefix. Then we can narrow down the approximate ship date. But murphydog's information is in the right range.

There may or may not be a serial number on the underside of the barrel. I suspect there will be, but maybe not, depending on when in the early 1950s it was assembled.

Also, as murphydog stated, the barrel is 6" long. The 6 1/2" on this model was long gone by 1950.

Thanks to all, I appreciate the help. I don't have the ser. right now, the gun is elsewhere, but you've given me enough to go on for now. Thanks again!
