Wiregrass, as you know my 1902 should have a 6.5in barrel on it and currently wears a 6in from a 1905 fourth change. It does have the proper sn# and diamond under the ejector rod. Sorry about the picture quality.

@dwh --> Post a picture of the underside of the barrel where the extractor rod docks.[/QUOTE]

My oldest hand ejector dates from 1904, and I inherited it from my paternal grandfather. It will be 117 years old this year. It's seen very heavy use.

My oldest "collector grade" hand ejector is this pristine example from 1924. It will be only 97 years old this year. Virtually untouched .

John - That really is a "time machine" gun! When you go back sometime to pick up another one, please let me know as I would like to ride along.

Here's my oldest. A 1905, M&P, 3rd change (.38 special) which dates to around 1911. The nickel appears to be a non-factory re-do, but was nicely done. Every rollmark and stamping is sharp and clear. The genuine MOP stocks are aftermarket. The 6 1/2" barrel must have been a leftover from the 2nd change. All the numbers match on the barrel, frame, cylinder, yoke and ejector. I do shoot it on occasion. It does attract attention at the range fom the younger shooters with their plastic fantastic. It reminds me of something Al Capone might have liked.

Default .22 Hand Ejector First Model

This thread is an interesting concept, as I never actually thought of what hand ejector I own that shipped first.

Mine is a new entrant to the field, as I believe mine will be the 55th post, and no one has claimed their oldest hand ejector is a larger than life model, this one being my .22 Hand Ejector First Model that shipped 18 December 1902.

.44 Target #7133* shipped September 26, 1912 to M. W. Robinson, New York City. It was returned to S&W for re-blue in June 1936 by George Cole of Scottsville, KS. (photo by Lee).

.455 Military #12742 probably one of 325 "leftover parts guns" shipped to Shapleigh Hardware, St. Louis MO December 29, 1917. It got a nice nickel refin somewhere along the way, and DWFAN cleaned up the stocks. Phoenix gun show find in January 2014.

.44 Military #13823 shipped November 14, 1916 to El Paso TX. I think the frame was manufactured in 1914 but lingered in inventory for a while. Found in the Phoenix Backpage classified ads in June 2016. Pretty crusty when I got it but it cleaned up nice and is a reliable shooter and crowd pleaser.

Also have (no pics) a garden variety .38 Safety Hammerless 4th Model 3-1/4" nickel shooter with original hard rubber grips, in good shooter condition, shipped January 1900. 121 years old and still as functional as the day it was built.

38 M & P 2nd Model, made 1903. I purchased this a a gift for my boy Amos. It was to be his first firearm. Collectable no, but to me it will always be my most cherished S & W.

32 Hand Ejector First Model or Model of 1896.
I was able to replace broken ejector rod and missing knob thanks to Jim (Hondo44) for instructions on how to perform surgery and parts provided by Sam Simmons (Sam1947).
Not sure what year it was shipped but have thoroughly enjoyed owning and shooting it.
EDIT: Shipped November 1899 per Roy Jinks.
Nice idea for forum thread.

Heavy rain here just woke me up so I skimmed thought all the posts. Unless I am mistaken, this is the winner so far.

Nevertheless, all beauties and great thread.

My oldest is a second model Hand Ejector from 1916, originally a British Service in .455 that was converted to.22LR. And with an adjustable rear sight from a model 27 added.

Shoots great too. I managed better groups with it than with a model 17, and the groups with the 17 were already awesome.

WOW! So many beautiful "Old" revolvers!
Here's mine, S&W 1917, not as pretty finish wise as the rest here, but I like it!

It's a great shooter too!

455 H.E. First Model. (Triple Lock)

Per Mr. Jinks: "455 H.E. First Model serial 5642 is one of the rare commercial shipments. It was shipped in April 1915." This gun was sold by S&W commercially and bought by the British Purchasing Commission and sent to England.

Unfortunately after WWI it was converted to .45 Colt by shaving the cylinder.

This is an interesting revolver. The serial number and shipment date of April 1915 which Roy has given you would indicate that it is probably one of a shipment of 100 guns to Wilkinson Sword in London. This is backed up by the the London commercial proofs and no military inspection markings.
Other examples near your guns serial number have a four digit number stamped on the base of one of the grips, i.e 4XXX or 5XXX. It is the serial number put on by Wilkinson's. Does your revolver have such a mark? If so some of the records for Wilkinson's still exist but I am not sure if they cover this time period. If they do you will be able to find out who it was sold to. You never know it could be someone famous!

Here's mine... 1906.

A factory letter indicates that it was shipped to San Francisco on July 30, 1906. That was 3 months after the Great Quake of 1906 hit San Francisco... when much of the city was still in ruins.

Pacific Hardware & Steel was one of the very few business that survived the ensuing fires that consumed the city after the quake.

I sure wish that this gun could talk, it has to have a story to tell.

Despite it's outward appearance, it's in great shape mechanically and still shoots like a champ!

Triple Lock #902 has a 6 1/2" barrel. Note the date of the early letter that came with the revolver when I acquired it in 2012.

Moved the needle back 9 months from the Mod 1899 posted previously. This one shipped September, 1899. Glad RK Mesa started this thread ; being something of a beater, I never would have bothered dating it.

This K Frame Model of 1902 sports a serial number of 50587. I've always assumed it dates to 1904. Does that sound about right to the knowledgeable here on the Forum? I need to letter it. It's so shabby looking, but has a sparkling bore and great mechanics and with very nice matching stocks. Probably wasn't shot or carried that much. I don't usually go for refinishes at all, but have thought about having a nickel redo. I think the surfaces couldn't be adequately rehabilitated and prep'ed for a polish job with out too much metal removal.

Was a $75 gun when I obtained it 10-12 years ago and deserves a berth here in the "Home For Wayward Guns."

Default 1899 shipped to graduating West Point cadet

This revolver is serial number 1254, shipped June 11 1900, to Leroy Hillman at West Point. He was a West Point 1st class member that graduated June 13 1900. Its original box is very faintly numbered to the gun. The letter states black rubber grips. and does not mention a lanyard swivel.

The first two pictures show the gun with period checkered walnut grips.

The butt swivel goes right through the middle of the serial number, which was common for the time period. In this case, the factory also stamped the serial number on the grip strap, under the grips. The '4' is the only visible butt serial number digit, and it is exactly the same font, and size, as the '4' stamped on the grip strap.

The next picture shows the serial number on the grip strap.

Following his graduation from West Point, Leroy Hillman married the sister of one of his West Point instructors, who had rotated back to West Point after graduating 11 years earlier. He himself was married to one of descendants of John Clark of the Lewis and Clark expedition. This marriage made Leroy Hillman a member of the Clark family, and he was known to many of the later-generation descendants as Uncle Leroy, one of whom remembers seeing the gun after Leroy died in 1918, of the Great Flu Epidemic. These later generations included two West Point graduates. It appears that the gun went through both of these subsequent West Point families, and was finally sold after the widow of the last West Point graduate had passed away.

Anecdotally, one of the descendants of John Clark told me that she remembers, as as young child, playing with the original leather-bound diary of Meriwether Lewis, which contained the notes of the Lewis & Clark expedition. She even took it to school to share with her classmates. At some point, the Government figured out where the diary was, and came and took it away!

Hillmans career is well-documented. After being stationed in Europe as a military advisor in WW1, he returned to the States, and was named Commander of the Rock Island Arenal in 1918. His picture still hangs in their gallery. He was the youngest officer to attain the rank of full Colonel.

Regards, Mike Priwer

This turned out to be pretty easy as I have all my S&W letters in a binder, arranged by ship date. First one up is my .32 S&W Model 1896, shipped November 27, 1901

Since it is nickel and has replacement pearl grips and shipped to New Orleans, I like to think that it was once owned by a pimp as postulated by G.S. Patton.

Second oldest is my Triple Lock Target shipped January 11, 1909, which came to me with a gigantic set of custom made grips. (Perhaps it had been owned by Bill Jordan?) I have since replaced them with a set of factory grips of appropriate vintage and style.
