Default Chiefs Special

I have a Chiefs Special from 1955.

The right grip is serialized to the gun, S/N 70248.

It has the original box/papers, cleaning tool and the original sale receipt.

I am also wondering about the finish. It has an oily look to it that I can wipe off, but it comes back.

There is a family friend interested in buying it and he has asked me to give him a number.

I want to be fair to both of us so I am wondering if you all can give me an idea what number that might be?

Thank you.

Chris

Very nice Chiefs Special!!

Assuming that all of the mechanicals are in order and the bore is clean and shiny, for a “friends and family” deal, $450-500 should be in the right range.

Flat latch, diamond magnas and with matching box and paperwork, this could easily go for $600-650+ in today’s market.

Nice gun! Is that a steel frame, or an Airweight?

I suspect it would do better than $650 at auction. A photo of the top of the box and the end printing would be nice. Does the bottom of the box have the serial number written by hand in grease pencil?

I do believe the cleaning kit is from a later gun. Early brushes and swabs had brass fittings.

Steel frame.

No S/N on box.

Plain box top.

Welcome aboard from ol' Wyo.

That's a nice looking 4-screw Chiefs (no apostrophe) Special.

I've been watching one very similar to yours on the big auction site. It sold this morning for $800 and didn't have the box, original receipt (which is important to some folks), tools (correct or not), and paperwork.

Even for a friend, I would never go as low as what's been suggested here. You need to remain friends, and neither of you should walk away feeling you've been taken advantage of.

ps: you know from the receipt when it was purchased. Based on others in my database it likely shipped in late '55 or early '56.

Yes, sir.

S&W sent a sales team to the 1950 International Association of Chiefs of Police conference. The team ask the Chiefs to name the company's new J-frame revolver. The winning vote was Chiefs Special.

Very nice.

The new owner will also be getting two boxes of vintage ammo that I sourced to add to the provenance of the package.

Around here we are selling the ammo and throwing the revolvers in to sweeten the deal.

Someone here who knows more than I do about Remington ammo can correct me (please do), but I'm thinking the dog bone boxes are a bit older than your Chiefs Special. It any case, they do sweeten the deal by a considerable margin.

Default Times have changed!

Love that sales slip from '56 - Jewelry watches guns ammunition.

Don't find any stores like that today, do we? And the price, $60. in '56 I was 9 years old and $60 was a lot of dough. My old man made about $100 a week and supported a wife and 3 kids. Owned a house and a car.

I made about $7 a week at best on my paper route but that was probably '58 or '59.

You asked about the finish ... said it looked "oily".

It is so well preserved , maybe it hasn't seen daylight yet?

Seriously , that is a fine flat latch Chiefs. Beautiful.

My interest has shifted to large frame revolvers particularly in .41 Magnum.

Only so much room in the gun locker (and wallet).
