What do I have?
I just picked up a Smith M&P. It seems to have all the features of a Model 10, 3 screw non recessed cylinder, pinned barrel. However there is no prefix to the serial number. The serial number is located as if it should have a prefix. Does not appear to have been ground off. So what do I have?

The font/spacing does not look correct. It appears to be restamped.
Look under the extractor star with good light ... original serial number should be there

Serial number puts it the 1903-1904 range. SW M&P Hand Ejector mode.

Also, I can’t tell from your pictures... are the grips long on the butt, do they hang over? Take the grips off and see what the number is inside the right panel. Does it match the extractor number?

Which is odd considering that the sideplate trademark, barrel, and hammer all appear to be much later vintage.
It also appears that it's been refinished at some point imo looking at the barrel rollmarks. (or it could just be the pic on that, or my aging eyes. ).

Right grip has 9626 stamped in it. I can’t see any number under the extractor. The grips are not long they actually fit very good.

Other number under the left grip is 37506 which matches the number on the yoke. I believe those are parts number?

That’s odd, it’s a fitted part and that’s how the factory keeps track of parts so they end up with right gun
( in addition to assembly numbers that you found)

That is assembly number and would also be found on inside of sideplate if removed

From the bottom photo, the grips don’t fit, but slightly overhang all around, indicating the butt was polished. The serial looks the wrong font and the wrong position without a prefix.
I also see nothing on the right side of the frame, no MADE IN USA or four-line trademark. So it is either a pre-1922 frame or it’s been ground off.
So there is no model number in the yoke cut? Then there should be complete serial numbers on the cylinder face and under the barrel too, as well as on the back side of the yoke arm viewed through a chamber. Those only went away around the time of model numbers in 1957/58.

I believe the factory used a Diamond stamp for service work and maybe reblue.
Can you Please post a left side grip frame picture with the grips off?

From the configuration of the gun, I believe it should have a "D" prefix and is from 1968. The diamond on the barrel indicates work, probably a barrel replacement or reblue. I can only make out the last 3 digits stamped on the barrel. If the first 2 are 55, like the butt, then it was original to the gun or replaced by the service department. What is strange is there is no star stamped on the butt. Is there a serial number on the face of the cylinder? How about on the rear yoke arm when looking through the cylinder chambers?

The "? 65" on the left grip frame indicates factory service work in that month of 1965. I can't read the first number.
In addition, the S and diamond mark on the barrel and on the left side of the frame indicates service work, possibly during production. Others more knowledgeable may chime in with better info.

Well, the Feb.(?) 1965 service date sorta blows my serial number guess of 1968. So, what can we tell from the configuration? The assembly number on the grip frame was moved to the location on the OP's gun in 1959 and the hole in the grip frame was removed in 1959-60. So, we can assume the gun was made between 1959 and 1965. Some time after the service work in 1965, the serial number on the butt and under the barrel was removed and replaced with the current numbers. One can only surmise the motive for that.

I want to thank all that replied to this thread. I have learned a lot from those on this site. It was an excellent education on Smith M&P revolvers
