Hand Ejector Special CTG identification
Hi,
New to the forum because I am trying to identify a hand ejector Special CTG. Here is the data:
1. Hand ejector
2. Serial number is 159826
3. Smith and Wesson Special CTG stamped on barrel
4. Barrel is 5 inches long
5. Fixed sights.
Also looking to see where I may be able to get replacement parts.
Thank you,
Justin

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! You have a 38 Military & Police revolver, Model 1905, 3rd Change from around 1910. The ".38 S&W Special CTG" stamped on the barrel is the cartridge (CTG) it chambers. You can get parts from Gun Parts & Firearm Accessories | Numrich Gun Parts as well as eBay and Guns For Sale | Buy Guns Online | GunBroker.com.

What frame would the model 1905 be? K? And when looking for parts would they be under 38 Military and Police revolvers?

Yes it is a K frame and it would fall under the 38 Military and Police parts section

K frame square butt. And, yes in the M&P parts. You may find some later parts, like for the victory revolvers, will fit and work fine.

Welcome to the Forum.
I don't see a hand, the part that advances the cylinder. Can you show us the other side of the side plate?
I hope you have the cylinder and the side plate screws.

Well, for starters I need a new extractor rod. The threads got broken off in the extractor. This is an heirloom firearm so trying to get it back to at least a display condition.

Cool. I ask because there's lots of very knowledgeable people on here and they might be able to tell you where to find what you need. Hell, some of them probably got everything you need in a coffee can under their bench! Good luck!

Just making sure you understand how to put the hand back? There is a spring inside the trigger that must be put to place tension on the hand. The trigger has to be removed to do that. Any questions ask.

H Richard. I figured that was the case. I hope that the spring is still in there.

A couple of things. First, I hope you are extracting the broken piece of the extractor rod from the extractor star. The star is fitted to the cylinder and the ratchet is fitted to the hand and should remain with the cylinder. As you likely know, the extractor rod threads are right hand. As long as you get a replacement with the mushroom shaped knob, you're ok.
Second, the hand in these older guns uses a torsion bar and spring inside the trigger, unlike the post-war guns that have a pigtail torsion spring. The spring is vertical in a cavity on the front of the trigger. The bar is pinned near the trigger stud to form a lever. The spring pushes up on the torsion bar which then engages the hand pin to force it forward into the window. The bar and spring may still be inside the trigger.

Wow. Ok. I did not realize that I should try and save the star. How am I to get the extractor star threads cleaned up from the broken ejector rod with the barrel pin stuck in there? Any advice?

You'll need a screw extractor to remove the broken piece from the star. You can buy an inexpensive set of extractors at Home Depot, Lowe's or Harbor Freight. If you are not handy with drills, drill presses and propane torches, you might want to have a gunsmith or machine shop remove the broken end.

Ok. This could be a problem. The center pin for the barrel is stuck in the extractor because of the broken threads. Picture attached.

The center pin spring is caught where the extractor rod
sheared. If you put the extractor in a vice to support
the star, yiou should be able to tap out the center pin.
I "think" the center pin spring won't survive this
operation but they are only about $3.00 bucks or so.

Well, you motivated me. I tried to punch it out but then decided to see if I can get the threads to move with a pick. Success!!!

Good! Now get the extractor rod, fit it and put it
back together. Squids can fix anything.

If you measure the length of the ejector rod, I may have a spare one in the parts box.

The rod is 3.75 inches. They are pretty cheap enough. A few bucks online. Just wanted to make sure that it should have one. Thank you!

I was talking about the broken ejector rod with the mushroom head. I think I have a spare one of those. Post a close-up picture so that I can try & match the finish.

I believe the gas ring is on the yoke, not the cylinder, on this model.

Question- are the plate screws and the yoke screws dimensionally different on this model? I have seen some you tube videos saying they are different but I do not see the difference.

The yoke screw is sometime a bit shorter so as to not bind the yoke when tightened-------"a bit" meaning a few thousands----which is to say it may have been "fit".

I went through all of my extra ejector rods and couldn't find a K frame one with the mushroom head.
Check with Numrich gun parts, at the link I gave you in post #26. It appears they have one in stock.

Friends of the forum. Thank you so far for all of your help. I believe I am almost there to the final assembly after some parts purchases. One question on the final assemble. I had to change out the center pin as the original center pin broke. I ordered a new one online, however, it is not allowing the cylinder to fully seat because of interference where the center pin meets the locking bolt. Is this a machined fit? Picture attached.

Did you check the fit of the extractor rod into the star before assembling it? If not, you might want to disassemble the rod and star and, outside of the cylinder, check to make sure the rod is fully seating into the star. You may need to chase the threads in the star to make sure they are clear of debris.

Hi Guy. I think my problem is the part that I have as a replacement. The collar on the center pin is a little higher. Picture of the broken original to the new replacement part is attached.

Justin, are you sure the new center pin is not for an N frame vs. a K frame?
You can buy upper sideplate screws on eBay or from Numrich. The Victory revolvers and Model 1917 use the same size screw.

Hey guys. Thanks for your replies. I purchased the replacement center pin from Numrich so I will give them a call tomorrow. Maybe they just gave me the wrong part. I bought other parts from them also for this K frame and they fit great. Can anyone share what the total length of the center pin should be? The total length of this pin is approximately 3 15/16. The long end up to the collar is about 3 1/16. The shorter end to the collar is about 27/32.
Thanks for the info on the screw. It will be easier to find now that I know there is some compatibility with other guns.
