Default R.M Vivas is THE MAN! Unbelieavable History of My NYPD Guns!! **PICS ADDED**

I had a post on here a few weeks ago about my Pre Model 10. A factory letter confirmed it was an NYPD gun shipped in October 1946. I reached out to RM Vivas, who has an unbelievable database of NYPD gun history. He got back to me today. First, the gun again:

I get an email response today from Mr. Vivas. Here is his response:

"Your gun #S846515 was sold on 16OCT46 to Probationary Patrolman Daniel C. Hynes, Shield #13855.

It would appear that he got some good use from it.

Best, RM Vivas"

He also included 4 newspaper clippings on Officer Hynes. He used my gun in a shootout with 4 gang members at a local high school. A high school located in my old precinct! Hynes was awarded a medal for valor for his actions. He was a young cop and a veteran of World War II.

If you zoom in, you can read the shield number.

Such a great story. Thank you, Mr. Vivas!!!

Patrolman Hynes looks like he could thump someone’s skull and he would not need a gun or baton to do it! I bet any miscreant having a sense of self-preservation gave him a wide birth.

Pretty cool history on that gun.

I wonder if he had any children?

Also wonder if he sold this gun to update later in his career.

I found that site. Can't read an obituary, though. Like to know how far up the ladder he went. These days, a cop with a medal like that would be on the fast track. Back then, might not have been such a big deal.

Based on my “data”, it’s half-and-half for retired NYPD so far.

Mr. Vivas has gotten me the names and shield numbers for two NYPD revolvers over the past years, an M&P from 1959 and a Model 10-6 from 1968.

The previous owner of the 1959 gun is still alive ... in Florida.

The 1968 gun’s owner passed away in 2013 about four months before his family sold his gun through a local dealer via Gunbroker; still in the neighborhood that was his last assigned precinct.

Here's a link of a thread I started about the time I
quit lurking here and went active.

My M&P was I'm pretty sure in the same batch
as the one The OP's was. My Original owner also
retired to Florida.

Mr. Vivas is fantastic.

NYPD 1947 M&P

Not really, but lots of them do. You live in New York City long enough and any part of Florida looks like Paradise. My biggest problem with Florida is all the New Yorkers! I avoid it as much as possible.

Some of the smarter new Yorkers do the Davy Cockett thing. GTT. Gone to Texas.

Patrolman Hynes would be proud that his heroism is being discussed still, all these years later. (or maybe not, many are very humble about their service)

I own 4 S&W handguns with LE history, and only know the name of one of the officers that that carried one of them (a KSP 1076).

I'd love to have the history that you have on yours for every one of mine. Congratulations & thanks for sharing it.

Apparently a lot of them do - both NYPD and FDNY.

However, I have a theory: On the last day before their retirement, both the NYPD and FDNY must have a tradition of promoting the upcoming retiree to a Chief's rank.

This theory is hotly denied by those in both departments who are still active but I have proof that it is correct - every single one of them that I've met down here after they've retired claims to have been a Chief!

I'm guessing they do it to impress the natives...

Do you realize that in one of the articles above they give Officer Hynes' specific home address, never mind the same thing in Queens for a couple of the high schoolers he arrested. THAT changed a long time ago!

512 Stone Avenue in Brooklyn, the Brownsville neighborhood, was a doggone tough neighborhood when I lived there and I bet it's not much better now.

Gives GONE TO TEXAS special meaning!

Hope you are kidding. But posting the newspaper article images onto his memorial page might be a nice gesture.

Just reread the articles. Hynes was quite the active guy. Two separate incidents there. The article with the kids at the high school was written in April 10, 1951. Hynes stopped the brewing fight at the high school the day before and recovered the unloaded gun.

The incident that got him the medal was from December 11, 1950 when he emptied his gun after being shot at outside the tavern.

When I was a kid in Brooklyn, it would take ONE cop walking the beat to maintain order. Hynes looked like every one of them. Kind to those who deserved it. A terror to those who didn’t.

Actually, now he would be vilified as a meanie, and as I recall, NYPD now has a 2 shootings rule. If an officer is in two OIS, they go somewhere off the street for the rest of their career because the ignorant consider that a sign of being out of control and a liability risk.
The days when real cops like Cirillo and Allard did what needed to be done are long gone.

Sure would like to see the "automatic Japanese revolver" that the 16 year old had.

Just about. The number of NYCPD 10-13 clubs in FL is mind-boggling. Look it up!

My observation has been that on they day before they go on terminal leave they take a header someplace and go out on a complaint of non-detectable soft tissue back injury. Then the get the 3/4's and bail out!!!!

This theory is hotly denied by those in both departments who are still active but I have proof that it is correct - every single one of them that I've met down here after they've retired claims to have been a Chief!

I'm guessing they do it to impress the natives...

Default Thank you Mr. Vivas

I also am the caretaker of one of those NYPD 38 M&P's (Pictures posted earlier). He provided me with some incredible information, similar to the OP's, about my gun. RM is a historian in the finest sense and I thank and commend him for sharing his data base with collectors like us.

Patrolman Vincent O'Shaughnessy, the man who carried S 848047/badge # 14068 was one of NYC's finest in the tradition of Protect and Serve.

I was a freshman in 1951 at Franklin K Lane HS and the tensions were very high. Neighborhoods were changing rapidly and there was a lot of animosity because the Blacks were moving into the East New York section of Brooklyn which had been a mostly Italian area. Fights everyday after school. I lived in the Queens neighborhood of Woodhaven which was still very pretty quiet and ran out of that school every day as fast as I could. I believe Ptl. Hynes was assigned to the 75 Pct. My area Pct. was the 102, a difference between night and day.

Yes. The 75 Pct. the old stationhouse. The new precinct (at the time), was moved to Sutter Ave.
