Default Some one say TERRIERS

8 Terriers , 3 have leaf springs, 1 went to USPS, 2 to NYPD and 1 went to Sacramento PD. Earliest shipped July 1950 latest shipped
June 1955. In the middle a lonely post war 32 hand ejector.

Neat! Are either of the 3 leaf spring models pre-War? I’m thinking the grips on the one at 3 o’clock look pre-War-ish(?)

My first of these little guys was just like your centerpiece, a transitional post-War 32 HE. The beginning of a slippery slope!

All off these are post WW 2, 3 of them have pre war style service grips but they are not the ones with leaf springs.

Nice pack of pups! Definitely something you don't see every day. It's been years since I've seen any out in the wild. Very nice collection indeed!

My S-I-L was a Deputy Sherriff for over 20 years. One day an old gentleman that he had helped out stopped him. He had a S&W box in his hand. He told my S-I-L that he was going to Living Facility and could not have what was in the box there. He wanted S-I-L to have it. In the box was a .32 terrier, with the bill of sale when the gentleman bought it, also a box a ammo with five rounds missing. He cleaned it and stored it away. Then the Sherriff's Department allowed the Deputies to carry AR's in their vehicles, with one proviso that they buy the rifles themselves. He traded the Terrier for the AR at the LGS. He was not a collector, so trading it for something he could use and might be useful to him to me was the right thing to do.

If it was a Terrier, it was chambered in 38 S&W; that was part of the designation. The same gun in 32 would have just been called a “32 Hand Ejector.” Just a small point, but an important one. For whatever reason, it seems there were more 32s sold than 38s in those days until somebody @ Springfield got the bright idea to stretch the I frame enough to take a 38 Special. The Baby Chiefs Special was born, and the rest is history.

Mine are SN 55362 and 55902. Found one in Louisiana, tagged as a Chief's Special, the other in Illinois. Very nifty little critters.

I just have this one, marked as a Model 36 and priced low in a shop that dealt mostly in Tactical Timmy stuff. I love it.

Default I do have one terrier.

Nice collect there.

My terrier is an I frame. Haven't had it too long. The finish is about 95%, maybe higher. I suspect that the box type and paperwork are as rare as the gun. Will look up the date and post it later.

Default Some one say TERRIERS

I was always confused about what made a true terrier....thinking that it had to be an I frame....then I found these J frame terriers...next to my 37.

I frame both pre WW 2 and post WW 2 with leaf spring, then improved I frame with coil spring and then 32 S&W, 38 S&W and 38 special on J frame.

I found a pre-War Terrier about 6-8 years ago and paid more than I wanted to, especially since what I really wanted was a post-War Transitional one to be contemporary with the 32 snub I had. I foolishly sold an early round sight Baby Chiefs Special which would have fit the trifecta well, but I later found one with serrated ramp front sight that is much easier for my old eyes to pick up.

TCAR 43 The box looks to be pre WW2, if you serial number is below 54474
there is a good chance that it is a pre WW 2 production only a factory letter will tell for sure.

Toyman, It indeed is lower and the box is numbered to the gun. 538xx I know I overpaid for it. Any idea what range the sale might fall into? The condition is close to pristine in my humble opinion.

Edit: Maybe I didn't do too bad. A completed sale on GB went for $2400 sold by woodlawn boys. And I also have the box and paper work.

Hard to tell but I would guess 1938 to 1941 late pre war shipment, the only way to be sure is letter it, cost $100

I knew I need more of these little things. My camera won't work, dang it. I've only got 5 and a .32HE snub. 3 improved I-frame, one blue, one nickel with round front sights, and 1 with serrated ramp FS, 1 new I-frame, and a 32-1. I really want a pre-war. I'd like a .38 RP, too. You know, for when you want to reach out there and touch something. I thought N-frame lust was bad, but the I-frame infection may be more serious.
