Another C-Prefix, One Line Address 38 M&P
C 8105. The other one I have is C 8583 which shipped in 1948. This new one might be a police issue, as it has 6129 on the back strap. Any thoughts?

It appears that a lot of the C-plus-four-digit M&Ps still have only one line. C prefix guns started being assembled in the third week of March, 1948. The four lines came to be in the spring of that year, so there were quite a few early examples on which the older roll stamp was used.
The two you mention are among the highest numbers I've come across.

The 4-digit number on the backstrap makes it a possible NYPD gun with shield number.

Very interesting. I must have one of the last S prefix M&P's. S976836 shipped Mar 1, 1948.

Not really. There were more than 23,000 units made with higher serial numbers than yours. Lots of them shipped in May-July, 1948. The latest shipment I've recorded was on August 12, 1949. The serial number on that one was in the S998xxx range.
I actually have in my collection three units with higher serial numbers than yours. They shipped in April and May, 1948.
The M&P with the highest S prefix serial number was S999999, and that gun shipped in June, 1948, to a distributor in Minneapolis, together with 99 other units.

It is apart right now for a check-up. Dry as a bone and no beauty queen, but original finish (what's left of it). I'll post when it's back together.
It appears to be similar to S 848047, which I'm told was in the Oct, 1946 batch to NYPD. These M&P's led a hard life.

Similar, yes. But the 1946 revolvers would have the long action, while yours would have the short action (High Speed hammer).

It's Back Together
It is all cleaned up now. The trigger is wonderful. A little radial play but not too much. It had some well worn PC magnas so I installed these ill fitting diamond centers. I don't know which is worse. The only real problem is the bulge about 3/4" from the frame. I am taking it to the range to see if it has accuracy issues. In my limited experience with this, when it is that far back and not too pronounced the bullet has space to stabilize for decent accuracy. I don't have access to magnetic particle testing any more but no cracks, visually. I got it for a good price so if it shoots well I'll be happy.
