From Butte Montana to Greenville, SC. Be interesting to know all the stops in between. Bet any gun starting out in Butte would have some interesting stories to tell.

I think there may be a law prohibiting possession of more than one RM.

Two things about that revolver I find interesting. First it was sighted in using ammunition for the 38 S&W Special. Just shows how difficult it was getting Magnum ammunition in 1935.
The other interesting point is the factory had shipped 547 RMs by October of the first year they were available. And during the depression. A lot of money in those days.

That's not correct. When you filled out the form, you had a choice as to what you wanted it sighted in at. Being this was the first ever .357 Magnum made, folks had 38 Special ammo already.

Don,
That is what I was trying to express. Magnum ammunition was hard to find.

I don't know if .357 Magnum ammo was hard to find at the time but of the 109 Certificates I've seen, only 12 of them (11%) list .38 Special as the ammo used to sight them in.

What I'm telling you is .357 Magnum ammunition was new. People that bought a new Registered Magnum that had plenty of 38 Spl. ammunition on hand had their new Magnum revolver sighted in with 38 Special ammunition so they could use up stock. If you look at .357 Magnum ammunition production records for that time period, it as readily available, but expensive.

Butte in 1935 had a thriving middle class and a very well to do upper class. The copper was flowing and the top jobs were well recompensed. I would love to know who it went to and what they were doing at the time.
This was before Butte and Silver Bow County consolidated so the Chief of Police or higher up is a real possibility as is a local business owner. Personal opinion is that if it was LEO use it would have been a shorter bbl.

Now I understand what you were saying. I figured “new” would take a while to get in the pipeline.
Thank you for explaining that point.

This part still doesn't jibe for me: "...had their new Magnum revolver sighted in with 38 Special ammunition so they could use up stock...."
Almost 90% of the Magnum revolvers were sighted in with .357 Mag ammo, not .38 Special. I don't doubt that it took awhile for a new caliber to get into stores and that it was expensive. That probably didn't matter to the guys who could afford the gun. What am I missing?

maybe they wanted to train with .38's, and carry .357?

I couldn't understand that. If a man was going to spend the high dollars required for a .357, he would naturally want it sighted in with .357 ammo. People have always stated that a large part of the .357's allure was the ability to use .38 Special ammo. As for me, I never shoot .38s in a .357. When I shoot a .357, it is loaded with full-power .357 loads. If I want to shoot a .38 Special, it is loaded with standard power (or less) .38s. But my .357s are all L and N frames, while the .38s are J and K frames.

That’s a terrific RM and package! I watched that gun for months hoping the seller would reduce his price. Congratulations on a very outstanding addition to your collection! I suggest you do a separate thread for that gun once you have assembled your pictures and any other documentation you may find.

Your latest RM would also be the subject of a great article for the S&WCA Journal.

I found my RM about 10 years ago (15XX) and have loved that gun ever since. Best $700 I ever spent. Extremely accurate, smooth, just a honey of a gun. I have a question: When I removed the cylinder assembly for cleaning I was lucky enough not to lose the pin and spring that unexpectedly shot out across the bench. I'm not usually this lucky. There is a hole drilled in the crane into which a small spring is inserted and a pin on top of that. The rounded head of the pin mates up with a small hole drilled part way into the frame when the cylinder is closed. At first, years ago, I thought this was a triple lock but now I know better. But is this some form of a later lock that was intended to do the same thing as a triple lock? As you can tell, I don't even know the correct terminology for this part and this system. While reading about these magnums I was amazed at the original loads. I can't imagine handloading anything that hot for any .357 magnum!
Many thanks, mj

MJ, it is the cylinder hold open (detent) pin and spring. (My unofficial words.) IIRC, S&W put these on K and N frame guns before WWII to keep the cylinder from closing while reloading. There is a small "dimple" machined inside the yoke that the pin seats into when the cylinder is opened.

It is to help retain the cylinder in the open position.

Guy/Terry - Thanks. Dimple is what I meant instead of small hole. I didn't think this was to strengthen the gun because it doesn't lock up real tight. Holding the cylinder open is a good idea, just be careful when removing the cylinder for cleaning!
Thanks again - mj

Typically, the experts recommend removing the yoke/cylinder inside a large ziplock bag to capture the pin and spring when they pop out.

Congratulations. Since you have all of the paperwork, what load is it sighted in for, distance and hold.
