Holy smokes! These stocks, as described by seller as “Used and show a lot of use with dings and gouges” sold for $212.51 with $5 shipping for a total of $217.51. Unless the lucky bidder lives somewhere like Delaware, don’t forget to add in the sales tax.

I think I bought a pair like this a few years back for $30. I’d be hard pressed to give $50 for such a ratty set. I got a nice set of medallion stocks like these a few months ago from Lee Jarrett for about the same price as these. It’s probably sacrilegious to even describe the really nice set I got from Lee in the same thread as this one.

Maybe the current ammo and components shortage now extends to pre war N frame stocks, LOL!

Nothing should surprise me any more, but I always seem to be surprised any way.

I'm kind of surprised they drew that kind of money with those mediocre pictures. Harsh white backgrounds and artificial light don't make any wood look good.

Of course, this thread needs to demonstrate what a nice set look like, attached to the obligatory Triple Lock revolver, of course!

I think that's why - the Stocks are 'New Century' / 'Triple Lock' time frame, so...somewhat scarce, and distinct from later N Frame versions.

Those stocks are not scarce. Almost 95,000 pairs were churned out for the .44 TL and also 1st and 2nd Model .455 British svc revolvers.

Right! They aren’t scarce, BUT try finding them on the market when you need a pair. They come up for sale rather uncommonly. I don’t even know where another pair might currently be for sale right now. Having said that, with some patience, a decent set will come up for sale in time and a nice set can generally be had in the price range that this roached out pair sold for.

Mrcvs, you are a tough customer! Yes, that's probably too much money, but "ratty" and "roached out"?

Keep in mind, they are pretty old, and from a time when people used and carried their handguns.

Elk or stag grips are a nice alternative until the right set of factory service come along. I like that it keeps the gun looking more period correct.
I do not care for service stocks in general for target guns but I have a few sets that are in my grip pile.

Agreed, pre/post WWI medallion service stocks are not especially rare except when you need them. My old El Paso TL serial 13823 came equipped with 1920's era service stocks with initials "B" and "C" carved in them (no idea who that is, though). A forum member sold me a decent set with penciled serial number 16884 in May 2014 for $200. I cleaned them with a soft toothbrush and Johnson paste wax. The fit is about perfect. I kept the carved set, too, 'cuz they're cool.

Slightly overpriced I suppose, but not on the same scale as paying $200 million for something only worth $100 million.

The truly scarce style of N frame service stocks is the 1900-1910 type, flat upper tops and no medallions, only found on early Triple Locks.

Upon further review, the e-bay stocks appear to be pre-WWII large medallion service stocks. Like this set, serial 45486, acquired from the late Dan M in 2016 for $260. Believed to have come off a .38-44 Heavy Duty, these lived on a 1937 .44 3rd Model 4" WK until a set of pre-war magnas was located (another expensive story!)

I thought so as well. Pictures aren’t the greatest. It surprises me that with such poor photographs and the sellers honest description of the stocks that they still sold for 4 times what they are actually worth.

Yeah, I’m running a little low on these, LOL! Admittedly, I have a weakness for these! Unless I’ve forgotten a pair on a Triple Lock that I have, I’m down to my last two pair installed on a Triple Lock revolver and another two pair purchased fairly recently from handejector on this forum. I’m running lean and need to fix that somehow.

I've sold holsters for more than retail price of a new item when folks get into a bidding war. Go figure.

That makes me scratch my head too.

I suppose it might make sense if there is a two year wait for a new holster that somebody just has to have now.

I see stock prices on eBay, even the newer football orginal stocks I could pay for 1/3 the cost of the revolver if I sold them. The prices are out of wack and guys are buying them.

The market for top quality stocks is pretty strong, I'd say.

I have a pal with a beautiful Registered Magnum who recently paid, quite happily, $500 for a set of very high condition N-frame service stocks with the large medallions. I had helped him to find the stocks. His RM revolver had shipped with service stocks that had gone missing. The ones we located had no serial number and, thus, were thought to be replacement stocks that had never been put on a revolver. They had come out of an old collection. They fit perfectly and the gun now looks great. My friend is thrilled.

About 7 years ago I bought a 38/44 HD out of the For Sale forum here. Seller said the gun may have been refinished, but it was very difficult to tell and he wasn't sure. He lied. When I got it, Ray Charles could have easily seen the gun had been refinished. It wasn't the best job either.
While it was a decent shooter grade gun, I had paid way too much and the seller refused to take it back. However, It had an absolutely perfect set of early large medallion service stocks on it. I mean these were like the day they left the factory. I decided to try to recoup some of my loss and sell the stocks on this forum. That gun didn't deserve stocks that nice anyway.
Knowing these stocks would go for a good price, I listed them at $400 thinking that I'd lower the price as time went on. Honestly, I expected maybe $250 out of them.
Much to my surprise, they sold at full price in less than an hour! So don't underestimate what a serious collector will pay for something he wants.

BTW: that seller was banned shortly thereafter for reasons unknown to me. But I did get a bit of mental revenge out of it.

Checkout the s&w stocks on amazon I ordered a few they look good.
