An honest old workhorse
38 M&P with matching grips. Serial number C1258XX. I was told the holster is part of a motorcycle cops rig.

A beauty. I love old guns with honest wear from the years and use.

Nice combo. But from quite a bit of experience with police revolvers, I’m going to offer my opinion that your revolver is in much too nice a condition to have spent much time at all riding around in an open top duty holster, least of all a motorcycle cop’s. The holster, a style similar to the standard Jay-Pee types used by large departments like NYPD, seems to have seen a lot more use than the gun.
For comparison, this is what a 1950s M&P looks like after 20 years service in that type of holster; this is an NYPD gun:

I see what you mean. The guy I got it from is a retired cop out of PA. He never actually said the revolver was carried on duty in the holster, he just brought it to me in the holster. If I see him again I'll ask him the history on the gun. While there is wear on the top strap and the end of the barrel, it's no where near as worn as yours.

I don't know about the story, but does the inside of the right grip have a serial number that matches the one on the butt? Doesn't appear to fit very well, that's why I ask.

Yes, same number is stamped into the grip. I believe the left grip is in better shape.
