Welcome to the Forum.
You have a .38 Military & Police from 1954-1956. The original grips were checkered walnut with medallions. Yours are aftermarket, possible Jay Scott's.

Stonethrower (I hope you don't do that if you live in a glass house!)
Your .38 M&P likely shipped in late 1954, based on nearby serial numbers. Only a letter can tell you for certain.
It definitely has five screws. You can tell because the one in the upper sideplate, near the hammer, was the first to go away, in 1956.
As mentioned by Gil, the stocks are an aftermarket addition.

"Help Identify My Pre-Model 10" ...
It is an example of the venerable Military & Police model , and should be called such.

Stonethrower, they are good shooters have a C prefix a little later than yours. Enjoy it!
