Pawn shops around here are horrible. You really don’t see any revolvers and when you do stumble across one it’s a common piece in less than ideal condition priced somewhere in the $800 to $1200 range.

I found this all original BSR in .38 S&W in a pawn shop a few years ago. No proof marks but it letters to a British contract purchase. SN on stocks match, too.

NICE!! Wish I could find one. The last few years I have become quite fond of the caliber. Must be, I just counted my inventory and I have some 1500 rounds loaded, plus some snake shot.

Have to agree with raljr1, pawn shops have been a source for a significant part of my aggregation. Good ones are few and far between these days but every once in awhile one shows up. Here are a few; 10-8 3 inch, 32H&R Mag LS, 27-2 8 3/8, pre-27 5 inch, 1950 Military 44 all rescued from pawn shops.

The last pawn shop S&W's I saw had notches ground into the top strap- and they wanted the price of mint guns!

That's a beauty. I usually try to hit some of the pawnshops in Sevierville, and Pidgeon Forge when we go to Gatlinburg. I will be heading that way in a few weeks....

I found my 646 with all the goodies at a pawnshop near the Jicarilla Apache Indian reservation.

If I told you what I paid you'd call me a liar. If it wasn't a pawnshop you'd call me a thief.

I used to find great deals all the time at pawn shops--like 10+ years ago. But more recently they seem to price everything at the highest price ever paid for that model anywhere in any condition. And won't budge. "These are selling on Gunbuster for $1300." OK...there is one LISTED for that, in perfect condition but a more desirable variation. And there are no bids for 9 months.

I have mostly stopped even going in.

Sevierville, that's the ticket. The day I stumbled into this guy's shop, he had a 6-1/2 inch blued .44 Magnum in beautiful shape, pre-Dirty Harry, with the black box, etc., etc., but I couldn't afford both so I went with the one pictured in my original post.

I wish you good hunting!

Like others I un-pawned many of my collection over the years. This one, however, is one of my favorites. It was actually spotted by another forum member who contacted me and worked with the Dallas pawn shop to help me acquire it: 3rd model 44, shipped to Wolf & Klar (Ft.Worth) who undoubtably did the 'pawn shop' engraving. Note that Wolf & Klar was also a pawn shop. The gun was mechanically inop when I received it... other forum members helped me make the repairs and find the parts. Thanks all.

Pawn shops are the best gun stores we have in this area most times. The last year there is not much to buy and prices are high for the most part.

That’s a find in nickel too, I like nickel finished guns.
Finding used guns is tough here locally, slim Pickens. They must have a fast turn over.

Do you notice more used guns in pawn shops, gun shops during bad times?

$400 for a Nylon 66? And mine is in the closet where it is handy for the next invasion of the armadillos instead of safe in the safe? $65 at my gun range's swap meet but that was 20 years ago. That may make it the most appreciated gun I own!

My best two pawn shop finds were a 5 1/2" .45 Colt Great Western single action from the 1950s, cost $70, and a 4" blue Ruger Speed Six .357, that I got in a trade-the Ruger for a Kelvar vest that I got from the PD at no cost to me.

If you're gonna hit us in the face with that gun and story I'd appreciate it if I could feel worse knowing what you paid for it.

The neatest revolver that i ever picked up in a pawn shop was a Webley Wilkinson Model 1900 Self Extracting Revolver, unfortunately it was shaved and reblued. The neat part of the story is that I had Wilkinson research it and they sent me a copy of the ledger where it was sold in December 1904 to a Lt E.A.Osborne of the Royal Engineers. I have since been able to research his military career. He served in both world wars, was awarded a DSO and was involved in the Dunkirk evacuation eventually becoming the commandant of the School of Signals. My revolver looks like this one.

I've bought a couple of S & W from a pawn shop in Rapid City SD. If my memory is correct, it was Curly's Pawn Shop. Bought a beautiful Model 12 Air Weight Model to have it stolen along with my luggage in an airline trip. When I bought it, it had only 1 box of 50 shot threw it. Owner said "To Light."
After the airline paid for my Model 12, I went back to Curly's to discover the same guy that traded in the Model 12 had traded in a Model 15 as also "To Light." Bought it in a heartbeat as same thing, only one box of 50 shot. Still have it today as my main revolver.
By the way, when I was in Curly's at a later date, he offered me the same guys .357 that he shot one box and traded it in for something bigger. Wish I had as it was a beautiful stainless steel Model 28, I think. Age is getting onto me as to this model.
I bought all of my Thompson Contender receiver, scopes and barrels from a Pawn Shop in Illinois, but can't remember it's name.

There were no stainless M28s. It was probably coated with hard chrome or something similar.

He asked $1800. I pulled out ten Franklins and spread them on the counter. He gave me a 4473 to fill out and a receipt and I hightailed it out of there before he came to his senses and realized what he had done.

Default Pawn shops not an option

Prior to the "Great American Gun Buying Freak Out" 2020-? the few pawn shops were the last place I would bother looking for a older S&W revolver, now with their inventory being 25% of that, oh well you do the math. I'm afraid of the 70 plus revolvers I have purchased I have had to do so on GB, GI and GA in that order and while the selection is great by comparison to buying local you have to realistically add $75 to the bottom line for shipping, CC user fees, and FFL transfer. It's painful I tell you.
I should add my favorite place to buy, and I check regularly is right here on the Forum.

I rescued this one from a pawn shop/gun store next to the Navy base in Newport News, Virginia, but solid it to another member here. Notice the McGivern gold bead on the Patridge front sight. The stocks are first grade elephant ivory.

I suppose it's the penance I must pay for working at a couple of LGS's and getting some great deals while doing so.......
But, every pawn palace I've ever checked that had ANYTHING that I'd be actually interested in, gun-wise, said item was priced like it was The Ark of the Covenant.

Any S&W or Colt, if it's older, maybe a little beat up is automatically tagged 'scarce, rare collectible' with some insane price on it.
Have about quit even checking them anymore.

Just rescued a nice 637-2 with box and papers for $450 from a pawn shop.
Says 38 S&W spl+P on the barrel, bet it is a handful with +P

I was surprised to find a nice revolver at a reasonable price, most of the display cases are pretty empty. He had it marked $475 and when I asked him what he could do he said 450, I offered $425 cash and no phone call because I have a permit and he said he had just put it out and he knew it wouldn't last long. I said OK and used a card. I hit 6 pawn shops, and the only other Smiths I saw was a like new 6"28-2 with box and a nice holster for $1495 and it had been out several weeks and a 6" Clark custom PPC gun with a Bomar rib that has been put quite a while. It had started at $1500 a couple months ago and was down to $1200. A few bolt rifles, 22s and shot guns in racks. I got more guns than any shop I was in.

Slim Pickins

I don't find them often but I've been surprised at some that show up. My first S&W revolver came from a pawn shop as did several afterward

1950's K22 with sambar stag grips
686-3
66-2 2.5"
65-3 3"RB
1920's 32 RP Nickel
28-2
30-1
44 Magnum 4" 4-screw with Cokes still intact.
First year Colt 3-5-7
Also my first 1911. Barely used Springfield MC Operator
And nearly every plastic gun I own. I got the 32 RP in a 3 gun deal with two Xds45's for $750 total.

I love pawn shops!

I have never found a gun worth buying at a pawn shop. Maybe I wasn't at the right place at the right time! Bob

You just haven't been shopping in the right pawn shops.

Found this one in a pawn shop back in 2010, I wasn't even into Smiths back then, it just called to me. It's the one that started me down this slippery slope. Sure glad I went into that pawn shop that day!

That is a true-blue beauty! I have the same front sight on my 627-2. I can't find anything on it online, but it looks like a 627 Model of 1989.
Edit: Oh, and I found it= you guessed it- at a pawn shop!
