So I saw this 22/32 kit gun airweight box.
I asked about it.
If there was a gun or anything else.
Answer was no.....but then.
He pulls out this.
He's had it a long time but never broke it down for parts.
Says he's shot it too.
Serial 27777
For so many 7's it wasn't that lucky.
Has a frame crack.
Oh well it came home with me anyway and I think I'll probably shoot it.

Too bad; it has such a nice finish on it! And it's an early Model of 1955.
But it'll likely shoot forever with no further issues. You'll get years of service out of it.
Maybe S&W will offer to replace it with a new Mod 317 kit Gun.

Jim I'm hoping your right.
Kit guns have gotten so expensive.
Pretty much untouchable for me now.
This was a parts gun price one so the dice went out.

Took it out and went through a box of ammo and everything was fine. Even have it dialed in pretty well.
I think the gun likes me.
Pretty happy to have a kit gun.

Wonder when the crack appeared, from the factory when the barrel was torqued in and missed by QC, or after shooting?

GREAT find...and I'd shoot it as it's only a .22 and should outlast you...

At this point 60 years later no one can answer that question.

Thanks Gary
You'll have to try it some time.
Brought my favorite K 22 and a 45 colt.
The colt was a bit more stout after shooting those 22''s

Well Paul, you proved again if you see any "signs" of a S&W, ASK. Paid off!

I am certainly no expert in anything to do with firearms but if that were my revolver, I would keep an eye on it. If the barrel ever starts to loosen, I would take it apart, clean everything, and put it back together with an appropriate Loctite product. (They used to offer a product they called “Stud & Bearing Mount”. That might be the right one... ?) Just a thought - not an “engineering recommendation.”
Great looking gun. I sure wouldn’t bother asking S&W for a trade!

Congratulations on a wonderful find
I have a similar Airweight 22/32 kit gun, but it is roughly 5000 pieces younger than yours.

I wouldnt ask for a trade /replacement either.
I knew full well what I was getting.
If it ever loosens parts value more than covers it.

Colt the box is in your range 32,774 IIRC
Almost exactly 5,000 from this gun.
